Inaugural Caswell Diabetes Institute Metabolism, Obesity and Diabetes Symposium (CDI-MOD)
with the Frontiers in Diabetes Complications Conference
|

The Caswell Diabetes Institute along with MNORC, MDRC, and MCDTR and in conjunction with the Frontiers in Diabetes Complications Conference, will hold their first joint symposium this fall. The CDI-MOD symposium, to be held October 28 - 29, 2021, will include plenary lectures, a wide variety of junior and senior presentations, a poster session and a lively debate. In tandem, the Frontiers in Diabetes Complications Conference will host a number of plenary speakers and workshops.
We are currently planning for an in-person event to be held at the North Campus Research Complex. Look for more details to come over the next few months.

100 Year Anniversary of Insulin |
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. In 1921 University of Toronto Surgeon Fred Banting, his assistant Charles Best and John MacLeod, building on the advances of researchers before them, figured out how to remove insulin from a dog's pancreas. In January 1922, Leonard Thompson was the first person to receive the new extract. The first injection was impure and caused an allergic reaction but a second purified injection restored Leonard's blood glucose levels to normal.
Before 1921 a diagnosis of diabetes was essentially a death sentence and insulin restored a more normal life for these patients.

Mary Malec, Director of Administration for the Michigan Diabetes Research Center (MDRC) and the Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research (MCDTR), will retire from her position on April 2, 2021. Mary has been in this role since 2015 providing administrative, financial and operational management of the centers.
Mary began her 23-year UM career in the Pulmonary & Critical Care division of Internal Medicine as an administrative assistant. During her time in Pulmonary & Critical Care Mary advanced into research administration, working as a pre-award program coordinator. In 2008 Mary transferred to Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes (MEND) where she continued her work in research administration. In 2015 Mary joined the MDRC and MCDTR as the Director of Administration bringing her expertise, knowledge and insight as well as leadership to the centers.
In retirement Mary is looking forward to having more time to do many of the things she loves including traveling with her husband and camping in their 5th wheel. She anticipates spending more time with family, especially her three grandchildren, and friends. Mary plans to take a photography class and do some volunteer work as well.
Many of us share Dr. Myers' sentiment that “Mary has been an absolute delight to work with over the past 5 or so years and it will be a huge challenge to fill her shoes. I will certainly miss having her around...” We will all miss Mary and wish her only the best in her new adventures.

The Center for Cell Plasticity and Organ Design (CPOD) is pleased to announce a competition for Pre-doctoral and Non-traditional postdoctoral Fellowships in Organogenesis as part of a NIH T32 Training Grant (Training Program in Organogenesis). The goal of the fellowship awards is to provide up to two years of support for outstanding scholars who wish to undertake a research project in the field of organogenesis.
