From our Senior Warden
Dear Friends:
Rev. Ann and the Vestry want to offer our sincere thanks to our members who have so generously continued to make their pledges, or make other financial donations, to the church as we deal with the limitations imposed by the corona virus. Your generous response to God’s presence in our lives allows St. John’s to continue its mission with God’s help!
For those who can, continuing to make your pledges or other donations has provided critically needed financial support and answers God’s call to “use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
For those who cannot, for any reason, continue to support St. John's financially right now, please know that we understand and extend to you our encouragement during this time.
We look forward to the time when we can all worship together and celebrate the gifts we each have to share!
Thank you, John Williams, Senior Warden

From our Interim Rector
“
Abide in me and I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.”
John 15:4
There was a quarterly series of booklets called, “Weavings” that focused on one word for the whole edition. I pulled out the edition on “Abide” which expounds upon today’s reading in the Gospel. This edition of “Abide” was printed in March/April 2007.
The author defines this Bible quote “With these words Jesus discloses the very heart of the spiritual life.” Thirteen years later, how true this all continues to ring for each of us!
So appropriate for “abide” with our Thursday study of Celtic saints, is a response to the question (how God in Christ abides with us) that comes in the ancient Celtic prayer popularly known as “St. Patrick’s Breastplate.”
The part we are most familiar with was re-written as an Anglican hymn in 1889:
“Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.”
In these most unusual of times, may we take a few minutes and think about all the ways that Christ abides in us; and…how can we abide in him?

Episcopal 101- What is the Three Legged Stool and Why is it Important Now?
You may have heard the term "three legged stool" but do you know what it means? Episcopalians use three legged stool as a metaphor for the way we define sources of authority in The Episcopal Church. The legs of the stool are Scripture, Tradition, and Reason.
Holy Scripture is paramount and governing for matters of salvation. We start with the "letter" and then dig deeper for the "meaning" because we take the Bible seriously.
When Episcopalians talk about Tradition, we are referring to the many ways that the saints before us have dealt with issues of faith and doctrine. This is far more than the colors of the altar hangings or who makes coffee on Sunday mornings, but we have adopted local practices as part of our traditions as well.
Reason is a necessary tool in understanding both Scripture and Tradition. Reason involves both common sense and the wisdom to draw on the very broadest scope of human understanding , along with the deep well of personal experience. There are some truths that cannot be proved, but only believed, such as God revealed by Scripture, which Reason can understand, but not demonstrate or prove. However, it is the rational mind that is traditionally designated as the residence of the Divine Image in human beings.
So, when it comes to defining faith and doctrine, we use all three legs grounded and balanced so that the whole enterprise won't topple over.
It is important now in this time of anxiety and barrage of conflicting information for us individually to remember to use all three legs in our decision making.

Sign in and be counted!
Who gets counted?
Every person who is living in the United States and its territories on April 1, 2020, are counted. This includes every adult and every child, no matter what age and no matter where they are living – homes, care facilities, jails, etc. This includes non-citizens, no matter their immigration or visa status.
Will I be asked for my citizen status?
No.
The Supreme Court ruled in June 2019 that the Census questionnaire could not include a question about citizenship. Everyone who is living in the United States is counted in Census 2020 independent of citizenship status.
Why should I be counted?
Federal funds that allocated to states for medical, education, family assistance, food security, housing and highway construction are based on the number of people living in the state at the time of the Census.
