AIA Michigan

January 2017

Champion the profession. Nurture our chapters. Build Michigan better.
President's Message

Greetings and Happy New Year to all AIA Michigan members and friends. On behalf of the AIA Michigan Board of Directors I would like to welcome all our new board members for 2017. We are very pleased to add to our roster: Tim Flintoff and Bob Hoida representing Detroit; Lisa Demankowski, representing Mid-Michigan and Flint; Paul Haselhuhn, representing Saginaw & Upper Peninsula; Karl Daubmann, Education Director, and Samantha Szeszulski, Associate Director. Obviously for most of you none of these folks need an introduction, as you likely are familiar with them from their ongoing engagement in other AIA activities. I want to say thank you in advance to all our returning and new board members and other members of our leadership team such as those of you participating in the work of our committees. Thanks to all of you for your dedication in supporting the cause of the Institute and the profession.

As this is my first President's message, I though I would offer a general reflection on the role of the architect that I think also applies to our role as active participants in the society as the voice of the profession. Tom Fisher, Director of the University of Minnesota's Metropolitan Design Center, and former Dean of the College of Design, is fond of referring to architects as "practical futurists" which I think sums up things rather nicely. Architects come in all stripes of course, but we do tend to be an optimistic lot with a penchant for wanting to make our corner of the world a better place. (OK, some of us may be guilty of even grander ambitions from time to time.) But we are also taught to be strong strategic thinkers who understand that an initial idea is just the starting point.  Development of an idea and its implementation are really the key to making an impact, so our optimistic ideals are balanced with a strong sense of how to make things possible.  So, as we continue to lean in to our collective role as the voice of the profession, I am confident that we will all collaborate to develop strong ideas that are informed by the savvy that comes from our practical side in order to advance the cause.

Will Wittig, AIA

January is a time for new beginnings. As 2017 brings about many changes, our AIA MI Board is no different. Serving as Michigan's incoming Young Architect Regional Director (YARD), it is a distinct honor to be involved in the institute at local, state, and national levels. A participant in the AIA National's Young Architects' Forum (YAF), the YARD brings forth communications to and from AIA National and our peers from across the country. Here in Michigan, this role reports to the state board. The YARD naturally lends itself to participating in committee work pertaining to Emerging Professionals. Coordinating with and supporting our Associate Director's efforts is also crucial. Locally, an effective YARD shall continue to be an active participant and leader locally, promoting the value of AIA to this key demographic.

What makes the Young Architects' Forum unique? The YAF is a program organized by AIA and the College of Fellows. Its charge is to address issues of particular importance to recently licensed architects. The YAF is known for e-publishing its magazine YAF Connection, sourcing articles from Emerging Professionals nationally. Great focus is also placed on preparing resources to assist in career development at convention, on-line, and political advocacy.

We all are strapping-in for what shall be a great year for AIA members.
