THE APOSTLE PAUL – LESSON 21

SECOND MISSIONARY JOURNEY – PART 7

IN THE PHILIPPIAN JAIL

Paul cast out the spirit of python from the sooth-saying fortune telling damsel (Acts 16:18-24.) causing certain men in this Roman colony of Philippi to lose a significant amount of income they made off her abilities. This made them as mad as hornets.

The men brought Paul and Silas to the city magistrates (judges) and accused them of teaching customs that violated Roman law. A multitude of other people also came against them and angered the magistrates so as to tear the clothes off Paul and Silas and beat them with whips. They cast them into prison in care of the jailer. It was the deeper “inner” prison, the most secure part where they worst of the worst were kept. Their hands and feet were bound in stocks making it impossible to move around.

Despite these worst of circumstances, Paul and Silas had no fear; they had a secret. As students of the scriptures, they knew the written word of God and its power. They may have even recalled Psalm 149:5-6 which said, “Let the saints be joyful in glory. Let them sing aloud…let the high praises of God be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand.” They began at midnight to pray and sing praises (Acts 16:25-29) so loudly that all the prisoners heard them. Then something miraculous happened.

Suddenly the earth began to quake so greatly as to shake the foundations of the jail. Paul and Silas were freed from the stocks and all the prisoners’ bands were loosed. The doors to the jail and all its compartments were flung open.

The jailer had been sleeping, an offense worthy of death if he were caught. The earthquake awoke him. Upon seeing all the doors open, he immediately assumed all the prisoners had escaped. Knowing that he would be executed, he chose the more “honorable” mode of death by drawing his sword to kill himself.

Paul cried out to the jailer to not harm himself because nobody had escaped. Everyone was still present, which was remarkable in itself. The jailer got a light, entered into the prison, and with fear and trembling he fell down at the feet of Paul and Silas. He knew that he owed his life to them, for what had taken place was impossible.

Tomorrow we shall see what came out of this incident.

THE LITTLE THINGS

Have you ever complained? I am sure like me that there have been times that you have done that. We often forget all the little things that God does for us. Here are a few things that we can be thankful for that cost us nothing.

Rain when the ground is parched.

Sunshine instead of flooding.

A songbird that flies into your yard singing praises to the God that created him.

Eyelashes that keep the dust out of your eyes.

A tongue that allows you to chew and speak.

Sight to be able to read this message.

The ability to laugh at ourselves when we make dumb mistakes.

The ability to cry with a friend when they are hurting.

Hearing the cry of a newborn baby, knowing they made it into this world.

Holding the hand of a loved one.

There is a myriad of little things that we take for granted but if we started writing them down, there are more things to be thankful for than to complain about. Why not make a list of things so on days that you feel like complaining you can remember what God has done for us. He deserves to hear our heartfelt thanks!

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

Preparation comes from separation. We must in these hours spend time in the secret place with God to listen to his plan for our lives. How would you ever know if you don't ask? You wouldn't, so separate yourself from the noise and sit quietly before the Lord. Be prepared for what He says. It may be different that what you thought it would be. Don't hesitate to do His will. The safest place for us is in the center of God's will.

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

Did you know that grumbling and complaining will bring demonic attacks your way? Yes, as you mumble, grumble and complain you can unknowingly invite the devil and his imps into your life’s situations; Which then causes the plan and purpose of God for your life to be interrupted or even stopped. Remember what happened as Moses was leading God’s people out of Egypt’s bondage in the Old Testament? “Now when the people complained, it greatly displeased the Lord; for the Lord heard it, and His anger was aroused. So the fire of the Lord burned among them, and consumed some in the outskirts of the camp.” (Num.‬ ‭11:1‬) However, on the other hand we see how David asked a wise request of God when he was a running fugitive; As he ran for his life from the crazy and jealous King Saul; David cried out to God in Psalms 141:3, “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. Then in Proverbs 21: 23 he writes, “Whoever guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble”. Then lastly he says in Psalms 101:3 “I will not put any evil thing before my eyes”. Perhaps today, as David did you too are needing to protect yourself from the attacks of the enemy. If so, a good way to start is to first carefully guard what your eyes see; For what you look at long enough will soon be in your mind and in your heart. Then what’s in your heart will eventually come out of your mouth. Yes, we must guard what our eyes see and the words that comes from our mouth; For as you speak you’re putting your heart on public display. (Matt.12:34) Have a blessed day; And don’t forget to keep your guard up by first protecting what you see with your eyes; For we know that what you look at long enough will get in your mind and into your heart; And Luke 6: 45b tells us...”Whatever our heart is full of; Our mouth will say”
