We decided to do a Best of BobBlast this week - This past weekend was the second weekend of my county's Open Studio Tour! We met great people, many students (past & present) and had great sales! All in all, we are very pleased! If you missed it, you can still view my work, by clicking here. We ship!
So this Best of BobBlast is about how I approach "non-objective intuitive painting." These are my thoughts when I hear other painters say they are "intuitive painters." Non-objective is another phrase I hear. For me, it all sounds indecisive. Intuitive and non-objective - or abstract - all are choices we make when we begin a painting.
You may have watched enough of my BobBlasts to know that I paint with a goal, an intention, a purpose... all result-oriented. I start with a concept first and I title the painting even before I start. It now has a name - and when the painting matches the name or title, it's finished!
Can you start out painting with no concept other than to play, splash, experiment with paint and see what happens. Absolutely! That is play-time - artists in the sand box.
For me, even if I am playing, I still like having a basic concept or idea what to paint.
I keep my studio ready-to-paint: My art materials are laid out ahead of time and set aside. The canvas lays flat on my table. I begin to draw and paint the mood I am in at that moment. I begin with graphic design shapes. Next, I choose a color combination and a design composition to give the painting a structure.
Continue painting until an image or an emotion appears that I have never seen or felt before. I love this part of discovery. It's like teaching yourself to paint, without reading a book about painting.
Show Up & Paint! It's the path of least resistance.
