A Message from Our Director
Dear Emeritus Institute Students:
On August 1, 2020, I will be transitioning out of the role of Assistant Dean of Extended Learning / Director of the Emeritus Institute to start a new role at Saddleback College: Interim Dean of Health Sciences and Human Services.
Over the past six years of working with the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute faculty, I have seen their dedication to you as they have implemented our mission to promote lifelong learning by providing academically rigorous, mentally stimulating, socially engaging, and health improving courses for older adults throughout south Orange County.
It has been a pleasure to visit many courses during my time with the Emeritus Institute, to get to know students by face and name, and to hear of the positive impact Emeritus Institute courses have on the lives of thousands of Orange County residents.
Moving forward, Dr. Karima Feldhus, Executive Dean of Extended Learning, will be the administrator over the Emeritus Institute after my transition into my new role.
As you have already seen, we have an excellent line up of fall 2020 courses for you to maintain your lifelong learning. I highly encourage you to enroll in new classes that you may not yet have experienced to broaden your education and to increase your social connections.
It has been an honor to serve as the Assistant Dean of Extended Learning / Director of the Emeritus Institute.
With well wishes,
Dan Predoehl

Why Are Their Caps on Online Classes?
|
|
- First and foremost, online class quality and integrity are closely-monitored by the State of California for the purpose of accreditation standards.
- Online classes are not "static." Students don't just view classes. They email their instructors with questions, requests, clarifications, etc. and the instructors email them back. The more students enrolled in a class, the more email communication time is required of an instructor.
- Instructors' time must be a balance of research, creation of class content, class preparation, teaching the class, maintaining email communications with students, as well as a large number of administrative duties. Thus, class caps are necessary to maintain the quality and integrity of all classes, including online classes.
- Class caps for online classes are essential in providing enrolled students the first-rate learning experience that the Emeritus Institute delivers.
These are just some of the reasons class caps are vital
to the online learning experience!
