Funeral Arrangements for Dr. Katie Patterson

MAFP members were notified in a previous e-mail about the death of Indianola family physician Katherine T. Patterson, MD, FAAFP, who passed away Sept. 4.

Visitation will be Saturday, Sept. 10, from 1-4 pm at Indianola First United Methodist Church, and services will follow at the same location at 4 pm. For those unable to attend, services will also be livestreamed on the Burton Funeral Home Facebook page.

If you will be attending, the Indianola First United Methodist Church has posted the following instructions along with the photo below: "For Dr. Patterson’s visitation this Saturday, we ask that you enter the church by the Southeast door of Newman Hall (facing the Courthouse, closer to Second St.). Ushers will direct you through the church to the family in Bailey Hall. We ask that you exit via the main doors of Bailey Hall facing Main St. and circle back around to the Newman Hall entrance to find a seat for the service. The parking area around the Daycare building/Preschool entrance (East end of main building), will be reserved for the family. We ask that you please follow these directions so as many people as possible can see the family and pay their respects."

New Performance Improvement Tool Available

Easy Performance (EasyPI), is a new, free collection of resources to support family physicians in completing a self-guided PI project in practice and receive credit for the work they do. (Video above.) The tool was developed by the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians and they are making it available to physicians nationwide.

EasyPI guides physicians through the process of evaluating background information for a specific condition, determining how this information should drive patient care, and implementing team-based practice change to improve patient outcomes. the program also guides physicians through submitting the project to the American Board of Family Medicine to fulfill ABFM's PI requirement and earn CME hours. Although more tracks are in the works, two are currently available: Adult Immunizations and COPD.

National Physician Suicide Awareness Day is Sept. 17

Saturday, Sept. 17, is National Physician Suicide Awareness Day (#NPSADay), a reminder and a call to action to make time to talk – and to act – so physicians’ struggles don’t become mental health emergencies.

MAFP is proud to take action to prevent physician suicide by sharing resources to help improve physician wellbeing, including suicide prevention resources, tips for starting important conversations about mental health, a crisis management plan and more.

We must shift the current practice landscape to better support a culture of wellbeing and come together to take the necessary actions to reduce burnout, safeguard job satisfaction, remove barriers to seeking mental health services and destigmatize seeking these services.

There are six actions to help reduce physician burnout and ensure physicians’ struggles don’t become mental health emergencies.

•  Learn the Vital Signs

•  Share suicide prevention resources

•  Prepare before a moment of crisis

•  Check in with a physician

•  Understand and remove structural barriers

•  Create a culture of wellbeing

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988. The National Allilance on Mental Illness offers free 24/7 mental health support for physicians. Text “SCRUBS” to  741741 for help.
