Dear Readers,
Last night we had the priviledge of speaking with the dynamic culinary duo of Julia Turshen and Dorie Greenspan as we celebrated the pending release of Dorie's destined-to-become-a-classic: Baking with Dorie: Sweet, Salty & Simple. It was, in a word, joyous.
While we're on the topic of joy, may I suggest you immediately get yourself a Libro.fm account and download Stanley Tucci's Taste. You might have heard my rambling IG Live earlier this week, complete with technical mishaps but if not, no matter. Anyone looking for a bit of uplift in your life, would do well to download the audio copy and then swing by the store for a copy to keep in the kitchen for all future culinary adventures. Looking for me this weekend? I'll be perfecting my Negroni and revisiting my favorite passages from the book.
Finally, if you miss us in between newsletters and want to know more about what we're recommending, (including why I am obsessed with National Book Award finalist The Prophets) you can follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
Be well,
Page

National Hispanic Heritage Month concludes today and while we never ever relegate celebration of Latinx authors to a single month it does seem fitting that today's Friday Five includes a round up of what we're currently reading and loving.
First up, a gift from the author of Mexican Gothic, Velvet Was the Night is a book for mystery/thriller fans that has earned rave reviews across the board. The action takes place during Mexico's Dirty War and follows Maite, a secretary lost to her romantic daydreams. But when Maite's next door neighbor Leonora disappears, Maite immerses herself in the search, crossing paths with a career criminal, hitmen, government agents, and Russian spies, among others.
The Five Wounds is one of my top picks of the year and while it garnered high literary praise from the most stringent of reviewers, I'm a bit disappointed it didn't gain more traction in-store...yet. It's a beautifully-written family saga centered around the town of Las Penas, New Mexico. Over the course of a year, the Padilla family struggles with how to welcome a child into a world filled with both immediate and existential criseses, confronting head-on what it means to be a family. Deftly constructed sentences bring the Land of Enchantment to life and drop the reader squarely into the action with grace and heartbreak.
Author of The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros, returns with her first work of fiction in nearly a decade. Written in both Spanish and English you can choose your own adventure depending on which side of the book you begin with. Martita I Remember You is the story of three friends who meet in Paris and spend the subsequent decades spanning out over three continents. A lovely little jewel from a beloved author.
We're putting the finishing touches on our holiday newsletter and are very excited to share a truly comprehensive and vibrant volume with more than 600 recipes spanning the Latin American landscape: Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Some dishes will sound familiar: Empanadas, Tamales, Arepas, Tortillas, Quesadillas, and Tacos; others will introduce delicious new delights into your culinary repertoire: Chilean Disco Fries, Nicaraguan Squash Stew, and Ecuadorian Easter Soup. Pre-order your copy of The Latin American Cookbook now and pick up in-store when the book releases in November.
Finally from friend-of-the-store Ruthie Miller comes a recommendation for a great YA read: Incendiary is the enticing first book in a duology. The story follows Renata, a young girl part of a group of people with special abilities called the Moria. Renata possesses the rarest of the Moria gifts: memory thief. Hunted by the King of Puerto Leones, Renata is a member a group of rebels fighting to regain their land. Inspired by Inquisition Spain, Cordova's fantasy world has an element of uniqueness that is hard to find in high fantasy novels; this book will pull you in and leave you speechless!
