THE HUB DIRECTOR'S CORNER
On My Mind and From the Heart
As the year draws to an end, it is a time of reflection on all that we have accomplished to “support independent living for our seniors and disabled neighbors.”

In 2021, we put two roofs on senior's homes in partnership with NM Resources, the USDA and Mihelich Roofing, through the generous dollars donated through the community.

330 seniors were blanketed in love with a bag of gifts and goodies at the holiday season, four seniors are now walking safely down ramps built by The HUB, one senior now has running water, two seniors have decks that are no longer tripping hazards and are ready to be walked on for years to come.

Over 34,000 pounds of food were given away to support seniors good nutrition, 900+ warm meals were served through the drive-in or dine-in option, more than $50,000 in goods were donated in the form of clothing, medical equipment, winter warmth items, tents, items for other non-profits to continue their missions and household goods.

Some of the unmeasurable acts of kindness were done as referrals, advocacy and help in times of need. Classes were attended from fitness, support groups, speaker series, crafting and continuing education. We hosted multi-generational activities for all to attend--The Hoppening, The Summer Bash and Zombie Apocalypse were all attended by many in the community and were a way to celebrate life and have some fun. All of this, and more, are what make up a year at The HUB.

As I reflect on the year behind me I am thankful that I can be a part of this amazing organization. Many times I get thanked for all that The HUB does--I try very hard to spread that love and thankfulness out to the people who actually are doing all the work. The real truth is that that are so many working parts and amazing people that make this organization tick. From the person that writes notes at home, the one who does the dishes, to the one who creates and edits this newsletter you are reading, the volunteers that hang clothing, the volunteers that stuff envelopes, the person who cooks the meals, the board of directors that faithfully hold meetings and especially the person who picks up a broom to clean up the mess. There are so many people that believe in our mission, “supporting independent living for our seniors and disabled neighbors“. I care for each and everyone of the volunteers and staff that give all that they have, share their talents with others and, yes, I believe sweeping the floor is a talent!

So as we enter another year, 2022, I am excited for the plans that are already under way. We love to put on a good show at The HUB. Give us a reason to throw a party and we will start the decorating plans! You have heard the saying, “life is a party.“ I think that we should party every chance we can. Our time here on earth goes so fast so let’s not waste it on things that bring us down. Let’s find reasons to throw a party each and every day. The HUB has some large celebrations for 2022 planned and we hope that you join us at each and everyone.

Happy New Year, from The HUB.

POINT IN TIME COUNT
How many people are currently homeless in the United States? How many of them are families, youth, or veterans? The answers to these questions and more can be answered by point-in-time counts. A point-in-time count is an unduplicated count on a single night of the people in a community who are experiencing homelessness that includes both sheltered and unsheltered populations.

Basics of the Count
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that communities receiving federal funds conduct a count of all sheltered people in the last week of January annually. Electronic administrative records are used to count people living in emergency shelters and transitional housing. Unsheltered counts are required every other year, although most communities conduct an unsheltered count every year to tally the people who appear to be living in places not meant for human habitation.

Why do we Count?
Point-in-time counts are important because they establish the dimensions of the problem of homelessness and help policymakers and program administrators track progress toward the goal of ending homelessness. On the local level, point-in-time counts help communities plan services and programs to appropriately address local needs, measure progress in decreasing homelessness, and identify strengths and gaps in a community’s current homelessness assistance system.
