Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU earned rankings in four pediatric specialities: urology (#28), pulmonology (#30), nephrology (#42), and cancer (#50). Ranking higher in urology and nephrology than last year, "CHoR landed at #10 out of all children's hospitals in the Mid-Atlantic region, which included Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, DC, and West Virginia." Congratulations to Jose Trevino, MD, and Kandace McGuire, MD, co-authors of the recent study published in JAMA Surgery identifying the lack of minority surgeons in academic leadership positions. Link to publication here.
Dr. Trevino is surgeon-in-chief at VCU Massey Cancer Center and chair, VCU Division of Surgical Oncology, and Dr. McGuire is a professor of surgery also in the Division of Surgical Oncology, VCU School of Medicine.

Dr. Marlon Levy, chair of the Division of Transplant Surgery and director of VCU Health's Hume-Lee Transplant Center is one of America's leading experts in total pancreatectomy with islet cell autotransplantation (TP-IAT), a complex procedure for patients whose chronic pancreatitis hasn't responded to normal treatment.

Mohammed A. Quader, MD, New Interim Chair, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery |
|
Dr. Quader completed his cardiothoracic surgery training at the Cleveland Clinic in 2000 and then led the University of Nebraska heart transplant program. He joined VCU in December of 2011 and is currently the surgical director for heart transplantation, and holds the Richard Lower Professorship in cardiac surgery.
In addition to his busy clinical practice, Dr. Quader maintains an active basic and translational lab investigating ultrastructural changes in the heart following cardiac arrest. He has been continuously funded by a Veterans Administration Merit grant for the last 5 years.

In the News: Nicholas Thomson, PhD |

Dr. Thomson was awarded a $2.5 million grant by the National Institute of Mental Health to study conduct disorder and callous-unemotional traits using VR techology.
An assistant professor in the Departments of Surgery and Psychology, Thomson will lead the study, "and aims to shed new light on the mechanisms that underlie callous-unemotional traits, thereby allowing for a more targeted approach in treating young people who exhibit them."

Tap Into the Power of Mindfulness with the ICA
Mindfulness can be described as a mental state achieved through nonjudgmental awareness and acknowledgment of thoughts and physical/feelings in the present. VCU faculty and staff experience pressures at work, from family responsibilities or from financial stress. Try attending the ICA mindfulness sessions every first and thirs Tuesday from 12:15 - 12:45 p.m. Find the next session on the ICA event calendar.
Artfulness - Artfulness is a short web based curriculum developed here at VCU to help practice mindfulness and stress relief through the arts. There are 20 art based activities to choose from (and could be great for a whole family activity) Artfulness information
The Community Health Education Center (CHEC) located on the 1st floor of the Gateway Building on the MCV Campus is a free library of health and wellness information staffed by a knowledgeable consumer health librarian. The library is jointly sponsored by VCU Libraries, VCU Health, and the MCV Auxiliary. They offer access to high-quality health information in easy to read and understandable formats, promote health literacy initiatives and sponsor educational opportunities for employees and staff at at VCU and VCU Health. Rao R. Ivatury Trauma Symposium — Recap from Dr. Aboutanos |

The 21st Rao R. Ivatury Trauma Symposium was held earlier this month, and this year's theme, “Trauma Care – Critical Decisions, Optimal Outcomes” resulted in another very successful meeting.
According to Michel Aboutanos, MD, MPH, Medical Director of VCU Trauma Center and Chair, Division of Acute Care Surgical Services, "we had 222 EMS, Nurses, and providers in attendance." A virtual conference, this year included a full history of VCU’s leadership in the field of trauma and Burn Surgery. Local, regional, and national speakers presented cases and discussed all "aspects of critical decision making that leads to optimal outcomes for the patient." A very special, provocative session on disaster management that dealt with the Las Vegas shooting tragedy also added real-life examples where life-saving decisions resulted in saving more lives.
"I'm very proud of the team this year, and we had great feedback throughout the week. The majority of attendees were from the Central Virginia region, others traveled from 12 other states including, California, DC, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas.

American Association of Cancer Research, Virtual Conference: October 6 – 8, 2021
Join the AACR 14th Annual Conference on the "Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Racial/Ethnic Minorities and the Medically Underserved"
The conference advances the understanding of, and ultimately helps to eliminate, the disparities that represent a major public health problem in our country. Reflecting this transdisciplinary field, professionals from academic, industry, government, and the community are brought together to promote the exchange of novel ideas, discuss the latest findings in the field, and stimulate the development of new research on cancer health disparities. Jose Trevino, MD, Chair of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Surgeon-in-Chief at VCU Massey Cancer Center is serving as a co-chair at this year's conference.
