Day 40: Headed up the California Coast on Highway 1

Destination:   Healdsburg, California, USA
Healdsburg is located in Sonoma County, in Northern California's Wine Country. In 2010 it had a population of 11,254. Healdsburg is a small tourist-oriented town an hour north of San Francisco where natural beauty unites with world-renowned artists and artisans to inspire the senses.
The summers are long, warm, arid, and mostly clear in Healdsburg, and the winters are short, cold, wet, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature is rarely below 28°F or above 96°F.
Map HealdsburgCA
Fun Facts:
Early inhabitants of the local area included the Pomo people, who constructed villages in open areas along the Russian River that flows through Healdsburg.

Also:  Healdsburg is home to three of the most important wine-producing regions in California, the Russian River Valley, the Dry Creek Valley and the Alexander Valley.

Art Form: Affirmation Chimes
Sometimes someone says something so well, it simply speaks for itself. In this e-newsletter we decided to give voice to someone we don't know personally, but who speaks beautifully about both the times we are living in and the artwork we are featuring today, Affirmation Chimes by Jendala.

Jendala shared with us the following blog post written recently by her friend,  Kimberly Nichols.

"There is a new hashtag roaming the social media circuits these days called #staywithsmall. It arose in response to the coronavirus pandemic as businesses across the nation found themselves shuttering their doors to shelter in place at home. Many of these businesses are our wholesalers, segments of the industry that have been seriously economically affected by our current reality. #staywithsmall has emerged to remind buyers that small businesses need our help right now and that shopping solely on big conglomerate sites such as Amazon doesn't do much toward the greater good. In support of #staywithsmall [I am] sharing profiles of small businesses [I] adore."

". . . Jendala [is] a vivacious force to be reckoned with, whose lifelong love of fire transmuted to an early career as a firefighter before forging her current role as a torch-bearing artisan. In her Healdsburg, California studio, she creates beautiful up-cycled metal art gifts that touch the soul and offer positive motivation like her gratitude chime. . . The chimes, hung with bells, make awesome patio mobiles for the young at heart. . ."

Artist's Statement: Jen Utsch
"I have always been passionate about art and creating, but took a detour early on. I graduated with degrees in Spanish and International Relations and went on to pursue careers of law
Jendala
enforcement, firefighting, real estate and teaching Spanish for law enforcement. In a nutshell, these experiences looped me back to my youthful connection with art and people.

In 1998 I was firefighting in Tucson, AZ and it was thru this profession that I found my passion for fire, its remarkable beauty and power. I began a personal journey by torching meaningful symbols and language gathered from a variety of cultures.

My designs are very simple, bold, colorful, and expressive. I especially love the affirmation chimes and flags which ring positive messages into the environment."

While we are not able to offer custom chimes, we carry a wide selection of her word chimes and individual "ornaments" which make beautiful statements on their own or linked together.

The Company:   Jendala
Inspired by her need to express herself and connect deeply with people, Jendala began her metal art business nearly 20 years ago. Her mission is to encourage a sustainable way of living for ourselves and our environment, to bridge diversity, expand our perceptions, and invoke emotions for self-discovery and wellbeing.

JEN PaintingChime
Each art piece is handcrafted in Northern California from salvaged and reclaimed materials. Today, rather than using a torch, metal is cut with a water jet (a machine that pushes high pressure water mixed with garnet) and then powder-coated (painted) with special formulated colors and assembled into its purpose.

While working with this high powered equipment, Jendala is committed to provide a chemical free and safe environment for herself and her employees. The artwork is finished with beads and bells selected from sustainable cooperatives in India and Indonesia where she has a strong relationship with ethical and family run businesses.  Each chime carries a bell to sound the affirmation out into the world.

As I photographed the Jendala chimes yesterday, I smiled at and appreciated all the words of affirmation. In the same way, we love hearing words of support from customers who walk into our store expressing appreciation for our being back open and to newsletter readers who have written words of support, enjoyment and personal memories related to these daily "journeys." Your comments bring us joy and we are filled with gratitude.

We are also grateful for the customers who are sensitive to our requests for safe shopping in our retail store including the wearing of face masks and using hand sanitizer.
