MGA Review, Recovery & Prompt Payment
MGA Review and Red Tape Reduction:
Due to the advocacy of BILD Alberta, the Government of Alberta has committed to reviewing the Municipal Government Act for amendments. This opens the door for many of the 29 Red Tape Reduction Recommendations we made in October and continue to advocate on daily including:
  • Offsite Levies
  • Inclusionary Housing
  • City Charters
  • Permit Timelines & Approvals
  • Municipal Reserve Allocation & Use
  • and more

In addition, we are currently engaged with the Government of Alberta in repealing requirements for Building Assessment Reports as part of condo developments as well as sitting on a government-led working group focused on addressing inefficiencies in the Building Code.

Economic Recovery:
Last month we shared our letter to Premier Kenney highlighting proposals to expedite the province's recovery. Subsequent discussions with Minister McIver and Minister Panda indicate that investments in infrastructure will focus on projects that facilitate private sector investment which aligns with BILD Alberta’s recommendation.

Prompt Payment:
BILD Alberta continues engaging Service Alberta on Prompt Payment legislation. We are concerned with the pace this is proceeding and lack of details available to-date. As an association we support the timely payment of our trade and supplier members but are concerned that a model similar to Ontario could create significant burdens on member companies without actually improving payment timelines. We believe more time and collaboration is required to find an alternative solution.

CHBA Wants to Know What You Think
To bolster association advocacy, CHBA National invites members to complete this survey on the current state of your business and your experiences with the CEWS and other federal emergency programs. Aggregate data from the survey will help the association convey the challenges being faced by the sector to the federal government, and to provide additional data in support of modifications to the CEWS eligibility criteria.
SAIT Survey
SAIT is conducting a survey to gather feedback from industry professionals on a new program to provide continuing education in the area of high performance residential design and construction. This will help SAIT determine if there are any specific areas of improvements in the proposed curriculum of this new program.
The survey will take approximately 8-min to complete and in appreciation, you will be entered in a draw for your chance to win one $400 The Home Depot gift card. Feedback from industry professionals will guide the curriculum for its new program on high performance residential design and construction. Click here to start survey.
Tall Wall Guidelines
Changes under the 2020 National Building Code (Alberta Edition) made BILD Alberta's Tall Wall Guidelines non-compliant with current code and puts the builder at risk of liability . BILD Alberta’s Provincial Residential Technical Committee attempted to have the Tall Wall Guidelines updated but engineering firms were unwilling to certify a new document. More information on this change and potential solutions can be found here .
