As this quarter’s Update goes to press, the global COVID-19 pandemic is having profound effects on the lives of hundreds of millions of people across the world. All indications are that the deep disruptions to lives – and to economic activity – will last months, requiring major changes in how we go about our work. FSG leadership has closely tracked the pandemic and has been proactive – in consultation with AFRE and CANR leadership and with our global partners – in protecting its people’s health and wellbeing, ensuring that we show leadership in best practices to stem the spread of the virus, and learning new ways of pursuing our mission under these extremely challenging circumstances.  The times ahead promise to be difficult, but common action with common purpose will bring the pandemic to an end, will help us learn innumerable valuable lessons, and we believe will leave us stronger, better able, and more committed to our mission than ever before. Please stay safe – for yourself, your family and loved ones, and the many communities of which you are a part.

The Update features recent progress in launching the AFRE/Food Security Group’s major project on Food Security Policy Research, Policy, and Influence (PRCI). Three agricultural and economic policy institutes in Africa have been selected for intensive collaborative research and capacity development activities over the next 4-5 years. We also review the impressive accomplishments of the predecessor project, the Food Security Policy Innovation Lab (FSP), which include significant research and policy analysis findings as well as strengthening of individual and institutional capacity in partner countries in Africa and Asia. Notable events on the personnel side include David Tschirley’s re-appointment as FSG Co-Director, long-time FSG team member Cynthia Donovan’s retirement, and a major faculty award for Felicia Wu, jointly appointed in Food Science and Human Nutrition, and AFRE.
