Support Professional Surveyors
Please consider supporting Professional Surveyors Canada by becoming a member today.

Your membership supports the work of communicating the importance of the key role professional surveyors have in supporting an efficient land market and effective land-use management.

While these functions underpin development and innovation for social justice, economic growth, and environmental sustainability, they are often not understood by the public or the policy makers.

Professional Surveyors Canada’s board of directors, representing all regions of Canada, volunteer their time and expertise to communicate this to both the public and the government through videos, advertisements, position papers, letters and by attending various meetings to ensure that surveyors are heard and their expertise taken into consideration.

Please follow this link to become a member: Licensed member application.

Not sure if you're a member? Please contact us.

New Letter to the Prime Minister of Canada

RE: COVID-19 Wage Subsidies for the Professional Surveying Industry

Dear Prime Minister,

We appreciate the difficult decisions that need to be made to protect the public health, safety and welfare when dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and applaud your government’s initiatives to provide timely financial assistance to businesses unable to support their staff. Your 75% wage subsidy is a responsible action in this time of crisis. Unfortunately, the restriction of comparing March revenue to 2019 revenue, or to the average of January and February revenue, leaves behind much of the struggling professional surveying industry.

The role of surveyors in locating and mapping underground utilities
Between the Poles
All about infrastructure
Accurately mapping underground utility and telecom network assets represents a growing opportunity for professional surveyors. In order to ensure continuing improvement in the accuracy of location information about underground utilities, some international jurisdictions are requiring that new or modified underground infrastructure be surveyed by a registered surveyor. Technical advances are making it easier for surveyors to conduct underground surveys. For construction projects owners, engineers and contractors are increasingly recognizing that surveyors who can offer a combined above- and below-ground survey are able to add significantly more value than the traditional above-ground-only survey. Surveyors find themselves in the field more than any other profession. For many surveyors, it is an essential part of what they love most about their job and they wouldn't have it any other way. Neither would we!
In celebration of land surveying and geospatial professionals around the world, we are introducing a new Point & Shoot section in the print and digital versions of the magazine to highlight the humorous and humbling (like above) experiences our profession faces everyday. Read more

PSC'S RESPONSE TO COVID-19
Learn about the actions PSC has taken.

Professional Surveyors Canada (PSC) is carefully and regularly monitoring the COVID-19 situation.

The PSC office is open virtually to its Members and the public, and staff and directors can be contacted by the usual means.

In most provinces, but not all, the surveying profession is an essential service. PSC has sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Canada and to several minister’s offices to “….urge that any order limiting business activities be mindful of the unique characteristics of the engineering, surveying, and geospatial profession and that these activities not be closed or limited.” PSC directors have also sent letters to their respective provincial ministries.

Stay safe and healthy,

Professional Surveyors Canada

How Close Are We—Really—to Building a Quantum Computer?
Scientific American
The race is on to build the world’s first meaningful quantum computer—one that can deliver the technology’s long-promised ability to help scientists do things like develop miraculous new materials, encrypt data with near-perfect security and accurately predict how Earth’s climate will change. Such a machine is likely more than a decade away, but IBM, Microsoft, Google, Intel and other tech heavyweights breathlessly tout each tiny, incremental step along the way. Most of these milestones involve packing ever more quantum bits, or qubits—the basic unit of information in a quantum computer—onto a processor chip. But the path to quantum computing involves far more than wrangling subatomic particles. Read more
Working from home makes you vulnerable to hackers. Here's how to stay safe
Now's the time for good tech hygiene, too.
c|net
Working at home can leave you open to hackers, even in normal times, and these aren't normal times. With millions of people in the US under orders to stay home to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, many more people are now working in their personal space, sometimes on their personal computers or phones. That makes a much wider target for hackers, cybersecurity experts say.
At home, it's less likely you're protected by the corporate software that can scan every link you click and file you download for signs of danger. Read more
