The Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Deuteronomy 30:15-20

"Choose Life"

Rev. Dr. Andy Mangum

A Message From Our Visiting Minister

Deuteronomy is Moses’s final speech to the people he led across the wilderness. He led them to the Promised Land but was not going to lead them into the Promised Land. The leadership into the promised land was handed over to Joshua. In Moses’s final words he affirms the promise of God that God has prepared a way forward for the people that will enable them to thrive. However, it also tells them that they must make conscious choices about their lives in order to receive the gifts God has promised to them.

From Anna Marie...

Henry and Inge are a German couple who lived near where my husband and I worked when we lived in Germany. They got along very well with us Americans and typically had us and others over for Sunday afternoon gatherings where we would sit at picnic tables in the gloriously abundant yard/garden and enjoy a variety of local goodies, sausages, cheeses, breads, and cakes. Children ran around and played; sometimes I had to protect mine from the gander who roamed freely.

One day Henry had contracted to do some unusual work for the Army and we were there with the soldiers who were serving as helpers that day. Inge served the lot of us lunch on short notice. One dish was small potatoes boiled in their jackets. Inge painstakingly peeled every one her large husband Henry ate. We Americans just cut and smashed ours, added butter, salt and pepper, and enjoyed them. They were quite tasty. Inge was appalled that she had so neglected her guests and had a hard time trying to accept that we were happily accustomed to eating potatoes in their peels and were not the least put off. Inge’s life was too often stressful enough; she certainly didn’t need to worry over a non problem. The point is that, although she could load a table abundantly, she still didn’t feel comfortable. I believe God would have wanted her to relax. She lived in a kind of abundance which she didn’t feel.

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

“Oh come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker." Psalm 95:6

Throughout Scripture we are called to worship the Lord in various ways and by various means. We are called to give thanks, praise, and power to our God. But the practice of all of these commands and encouragements must begin with submission to God — “bow down…kneel before the Lord.” There is no true worship without submission. We can admire Jesus, we can appreciate the selflessness and sacrifice of the cross, we can even confess that He is Lord…but if we do not submit to Him as our Lord, then we have not offered Him genuine worship. Worshiping God begins by submitting to God’s rightful rule over us because He is “our maker.” There is no one that does not owe their existence to God. Because He is the creator of all things, all things owe their allegiance to Him. None of us are exempted from this call—“let us worship and bow down”—because none are exempted in the description of God as their“maker.” We are every one of us summoned to the privileged position of worshiping at the feet of Jesus Christ.

To bow down or kneel is perhaps the greatest physical act that one can do in worship. When we do this, it literally puts the person or object above us, thus showing our humility. When we acknowledge God's worth and recognize that He is above us. We place ourselves in His trust and expect Him to take care of us. God is above us and we should bow down in recognition of this. Have you worshipped Jesus Christ today? Then you must begin by bowing down, by kneeling before Him and submitting to His rightful rule over your every thought, word, deed, and design. You must prepare to meet your maker.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, I need new enthusiasm to worship and serve You. Breathe new excitement and anticipation into me. Blow Your new life into me today. I breathe You into my cluttered lungs. Clean out my selfish ways, and make me holy. Get rid of junk in my schedule, and make me spiritual. Holy Spirit, make me holy and make me spiritual, like You. Amen.
