Did you miss a sermon or can't remember the good statement made by Pastor Jason recently?

In last week's reading, we reflected on how seeing and confirming the resurrection of Jesus actually had very little to do with following Jesus. In this week's reading, we build on that concept. here we have some unnamed disciples among whom Jesus appears. After they hear Jesus' testimony about what has happened to him and see his wounded hands and feet, just like Thomas, Jesus asks them to share some of their food with him.
It is a remarkable description of the disciples' feelings and emotions in verse 41: "in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering." When the disciples are more than able to see the evidence of Jesus' death and resurrection, they still have a blend of doubt and faith mixing their perception and perspective. Jesus never seems to be disappointed or dismayed, or even annoyed by his disciples' shock and awe receptions of him following his death.
Our account may be trying to stop another conspiracy theory emerging in the early Christian community, that it was Jesus' "ghost" that appeared rather than flesh and blood. To put it plainly: ghosts don't have dinner parties with the living. And there may be another part of the post-resurrection encounter stories present here: the opportunity to transform into a follower of Jesus is not with evidence or reasoning, but with eating together at table.
I suspect those you do not like, or whose views or opinions you criticize or object to, you do not eat with. But when we do invite our friends, our neighbors, and even our enemies to join us at the table, we are giving the most powerful witness to the resurrected Christ that is possible--one that will certainly transform hearts and lives for the better. It is hard to curse and condemn someone when you have ate with them!

Imagine with Me:
State of the Church Address - Spring 2021
|
|
|
Rev. Terri Hord Owens shares both a report of where the church is in these days of pandemic, but also where it might go if we imagine a future with God's limitless love.
"It has been a year, church, a year, not only of crisis and pandemic, but a year of finding blessings in unexpected places, learning things in new ways. So what now? Where do we go from here? What's next? I think you all know that we cannot return to normal. There will never be a way that we can be what we once were. But I believe it will be important to bring who we have been, the lessons that we've learned, with us as we move forward into our shared future." -Rev Terri Hord Owens.
