The World’s Largest Four-Day Workweek Trial Is Going Well, But Don’t Jump for Joy Just Yet
HR Brew | Sam Blum | September 27, 2022

This HR leader says there are many pain points to be aware of when implementing a four-day workweek. The world’s largest four-day workweek experiment reached a milestone last month: the halfway point in its six-month trial. And participants are singing its praises. Some 86% of the 70 participating UK companies said they are “extremely likely” or “likely” to continue with a 32-hour week after the trial’s conclusion, according to a survey conducted by 4 Day Week Global, the organization running the pilot program.
Friday Water Cooler: Recruiters, Would You Like Your Resumés Frosted?
HR Brew | Adam DeRose | September 29, 2022

The internet is debating job-search stunts after a woman sent Nike her resumé on a sheet cake. Elle Woods’s pink and scented resumé may have been the most over-the-top to have crossed Professor Callahan’s desk, but she wasn’t the first, or the last, to go out of her way to impress a hiring manager.
Just last week, job-seeker Karly Pavlinac Blackburn showed a cake she’d sent to a Nike company party in a now-viral LinkedIn post. On top of layers of what we’re hoping were vanilla sponge and buttercream was an edible picture of her resumé.
The Importance of Continuous Monitoring

For decades, employers have turned to pre-hire background screens to identify criminal activity among prospective employers. To further protect customers and employees, many background screening companies began offering periodic re-screening of employee lists. Being notified once a current employee has either been involved in any criminal is vital to an employer.
Embracing The Workforce’s New Power-Trust Dynamics
Forbes | Ekta Vyas, Ph.D | August 24, 2022

In 2021, organizations started recalibrating after massive, unexpected shifts in the ways their teams worked and in how they conducted business. While many prescriptive approaches exist for how to manage planned and unplanned changes, a considerable change management challenge this time is the emergence of a new employer value proposition needed to re-establish, nurture and sustain successful employer-employee relationships. Report: 9 In 10 Companies Will Require Return to Office By 2023
HR Dive | Kathryn Moody | September 30, 2022

Ninety percent of companies said they will require employees to return to the office at least part of the week in 2023, according to a Sept. 26 report from Resume Builder. A fifth said they will fire workers who do not return. For companies currently functioning under a hybrid work policy, 77% said that policy will change in the next year. While fewer than one-fifth said they will require employees to be full time in the office...
The Key to A Successful Post-Pandemic Workplace Might Be Coaching
HR Dive | Laurel Kalser | September 30, 2022

Coaching is seen as a key strategy for addressing the cultural changes brought on by pandemic-prompted shifts to hybrid and flexible work, according to oachHub’s survey on global business trends for 2023. Using coaching to reskill various levels of leadership (from first-time leaders to executives) is imperative to meet these changes, respondents said. Most (87%) already use some kind of coaching, although it’s been used mainly for mid- and senior-level managers.
How to Manage an Employee’s Request for an ADA Accommodation
MEC Sponsor Paycor | September 23, 2022

Begin a conversation with the employee. The goal of this discussion is to learn about the barriers the employee is experiencing and why they believe they need accommodation. The employer can share an overview of the accommodation request process to ensure the employee understands next steps. Everyone involved in the conversation must agree to keep shared information confidential when discussing accommodations. This information will never go in an employee’s file and should only be accessible to the employee’s manager and HR. Co-workers whose job duties or workspace may change because of the accommodation can be made aware of the modifications needed, but not the reasons for the change.
Human Resource Planning Strategies in Project Management
HR Today | HPPY | September 22, 2022

If you engage in project management, you can occasionally employ your own team members and work on a number of project manager deliverables. Creating a human resource plan is one approach to keeping track of your staff and their varied tasks.
You can develop your own strategies for your projects if you comprehend what a human resource plan in project management entails and what you might put in one. In this post, we’ll go over what a human resource plan is in project management and how to create one.
10 Key Factors to Effective Employee Reviews
HR Today | ClearCompany Recruiting | September 22, 2022

Unfortunately, performance review fails are all too common: research shows that managers and employees alike find performance appraisals to be “time-consuming, demotivating, inaccurate, biased, and unfair.” Did you know that only one in five employees are motivated to do great work by current performance management methods? Not to mention, 85% of employees would consider quitting if they felt they received an unfair performance review. But don’t get discouraged if you think your employees may be feeling the same way.
5 Common Onboarding Mistakes to Avoid
HR Today | Essium | Tamila McDonald September 27, 2022

In many cases, a company’s onboarding process is the first chance an organization has to make a formal first impression as a workplace. If it doesn’t go smoothly, it doesn’t just harm a new hire’s chances of succeeding; it can cause them to immediately start seeking out opportunities elsewhere.
Ultimately, that’s why avoiding onboarding mistakes is critical. If you want to make sure you’re able to effectively convert new hires into happy, thriving employees, here are five common onboarding mistakes to avoid.
3 Types of Meetings — and How to Do Each One Well
Harvard Business Review | Amy Bonsall September 29, 2022

Meetings are broken. Something happened when work moved online in 2020, and opening up the office hasn’t fixed it. Every interaction with colleagues became a video call, and our days became a game of transactional Tetris: Where can I slot in this or that meeting? Now, with policies directing which days of the week to be where, the Tetris has gotten more complex.
In my work helping distributed and hybrid organizations flourish, I see employees commuting only to spend time in near-empty offices or on calls.
How Companies Should Set — and Report — DEI Goals
Harvard Business Review | Alexandra Kalev and Frank Dobbin | September 29, 2022

Can setting workforce diversity goals and posting progress reports help companies move the needle on diversity? This approach has spread like wildfire in the last two years. It’s too soon to tell whether the new fad is working, so we turned to past experience of firms that set goals and posted progress as early as the 1970s. That experience suggests that when done right, goals and regular progress reports can boost diversity even among management jobs.
Inflation, Great Resignation but No Raises? Time To ‘Leverage Data’
HR Executive | Kathryn Mayer | September 29, 2022

More than one-third of employees report they haven’t received a pay increase in the past year, according to a survey of 1,000 employees by HR software firm BambooHR. The data also reveals some stark differences among genders. Fewer women (62%) are receiving raises than their male counterparts (66%), and those women who are getting salary increases are getting smaller raises than their male colleagues, 5.24% increases for women compared to 6.39% for men.
When Disaster Hits, What Is HR’s Role in Avoiding ‘Confusion and Chaos’?
HR Executive | Tom Starner | September 29, 2022

In the wake of Hurricane Ian’s assault on the state of Florida, HR leaders nationwide are reminded that the function must play a leading role in helping employers be as ready as possible when disaster strikes. And with climate change expected to usher in increasingly severe weather events in the coming years, now is the time to get ready.
“No matter the size of your business or what industry you’re in, you need effective disaster preparedness plans,” says Amy Bakay, CEO at HRNola, an HR consulting firm based in New Orleans.

FAMILY FORTUNE
Predicting the peak of fall color can be difficult. Missouri is blessed with a great variety of trees, shrubs, and vines. Their leaves turn at different times, so Missourians enjoy a fall color season that may last four to six weeks. Sassafras, sumac, and Virginia creeper are some of the earliest to change, beginning in mid-September. By late September, black gum, bittersweet, and dogwood are turning.

Where’s The Best Place to See Fall Color?

You can enjoy Missouri’s fall color almost anywhere.

NOTES FROM NAN & SUE

TRIBUTE

Erin Barfels was a well-respected HR professional in the Des Moines, Iowa area that many not only looked to as a colleague/peer, but as a friend. The Iowa/Missouri Employment Conferences had the honor of having Erin speak at our conferences, so it was important that we took a moment to remember her.

On September 4, 2022, Erin Barfels, 49, finished her 12-year race with cancer crossing the finish line to join her mother and sister in heaven.

I had the privilege of meeting Erin more than 20 years ago while working with her sister, Dana. Likely, if you knew Dana, you would have known Erin as they were the best of friends. Both were wonderful individuals – smart, confident, and genuinely nice people that cared deeply about their families, friends and just about anyone around them. Dana was strong and kind. A great friend and wonderful mother. Erin had a beautiful soul with a huge, caring heart who made an impact on many lives.

Unfortunately, these two amazing individuals lost their fierce battle with cancer 12 years apart. I am forever grateful to have known them and lucky enough to call them friends.

Our hearts break for their families, friends, and colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers are with them now. Their contribution to this world is immeasurable.
