American Bar Association publishes biography of SABA Member, Judge Juan Vasquez
From the Texas Cotton Fields to the United States Tax Court: The Life Journey of Juan F. Vasquez authors, Anthony Head and Mary Theresa Vasquez

"I've always looked up to my father, but reading his story this way has made me humble beyond words to be my father’s son,” says Jaime Vasquez, partner at Chamberlain Hrdlicka.   
 
Judge Juan F. Vasquez is the first Hispanic American appointed to the United States Tax Court. The book depicts his journey surmounting numerous challenges such as poverty, manual labor, and discrimination.
 
The cover artwork is a Jesse Treviño commission and represents Judge Vasquez as a child working in the field alongside his grandfather, who raised him. Judge Vasquez’s children, Jaime and Juan Vasquez, Jr., are both tax attorneys and his daughter-in-law is Judge Veronica Vasquez of Probate Court No. 2. Jaime also serves as a SABA Director. He adds, “My father’s story will inspire my children and other children for generations to come.”

Judge Yolanda Huff appointed to the Judicial Commission on Mental Health
Recognized for her expertise, insight and commitment, Judge Yolanda Huff, County Court at Law #12 has been appointed to the Judicial Commission on Mental Health. Created in 2018 by the Supreme Court of Texas and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, the Commission develops and implements policy initiatives designed to improve the justice system’s interaction with those who have mental health challenges.
David B. West Joins Caldwell, East & Finlayson

The 4th Court of Appeals selects Michael Ritter as its Original Proceedings Attorney
The 4th Court of Appeals has selected Michael Ritter to be its next Original Proceedings Attorney (OPA). The primary responsibility of the OPA is to work for and with all seven judges in handling original proceedings, including initial screening of all petitions for extraordinary writs and related motions, such as emergency motions for temporary relief, and written and oral analysis of the law as applied to the facts presented.

Michael Ritter position as the OPA began on January 1, 2021.

Judicial Selection
Commission on Judicial Selection Final Report

The Texas Commission on Judicial Selection submitted their final report to the Governor and Legislature December 30, 2020. The 64-page report includes a one-page executive summary. San Antonio was one of four Texas cities visited by the Commission to collect public input. Many SABA members testified at that forum and other Commission meetings. SABA also conducted a member survey regarding judicial selection and submitted the Survey Report to the Commission. The full report can be viewed here: VIEW REPORT >
