HIGHLIGHTS FROM SEPTEMBER 26, 2022 - STATED SESSION MEETING

Weekly Devotional

Come! Let us raise a joyful song to the Lord,

a shout of triumph to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving,

and sing him songs of triumph.

For the Lord is a great God,

A great King over all gods;

The farthest places of the earth are in his hands,

And the folds of the hills are his;

the sea is his, he made it;

the dry land fashioned by his hands.

-Psalm 95, 1-5

Fifty-nine years ago, this evening (27 Sept), my mother was in labor with me. I arrived in this world at 9:42 pm. My mother was my Rock of salvation. I am the middle of five children. She and my father raised us in the Presbyterian Church by starting with that foundation. They started us off early and never looked back. I picked the month of October to submit my devotional because it is the anniversary month of my mother’s death. My Rock was gone and even almost a year later it still feels like yesterday. My sister has taken over as our Rock, even with five children of her own she has managed to keep her four brothers in line. She keeps building on the foundation that mom and dad started.

In 1 Timothy 5, Paul describes the church as people dedicated to doing whatever it takes to reach out and help others. As the church, we have a responsibility to serve and help others in need. Too often, we see a need and wait for the pastor or someone on staff to take responsibility. But that’s not the way church works. Caring for each other as well as those outside of the church is the quickest way to see Jesus change lives. When everything around us seems to be shifting and changing, we can always cling firmly to the rock which does not move and remains the same. The Lord, like a rock, is the only one who provides stability and immutability in our lives. Solid-rock faith is faith in the Solid Rock. The storms will come, but our foundation will stand firm when built in Him. (Jon Dyer)

Raleigh Court Presbyterian (RCPC) is my Rock. Stella, Jordan and I came to RCPC four and half years ago and like my parents, we have never looked back.

Let us pray - God of power and might, God of mercy and grace, you are indeed my rock. In you, I find protection. In you I find salvation. How thankful I am, dear Lord, for your strength, and that you make your strength available to me. When I am weak, you are mighty. When I am afraid, you are my comfort. When I am exposed, you keep me safe. Yet you are so much more than a rock, Lord. You are alive. You are aflame. You are passionate. You are loving.  You are kind. Help me, O God, to let the images of you in Scripture expand my knowledge and experience of you. May I be continually stretched by your Word to know you more fully and truly. All praise be to you, O God, my rock and my deliverer! Amen. (The High Calling)

Christian Education

Stones play an important part in the Bible, locations of divine revelation. We are in a building season at RCPC. Each person is in a building season of a life, needing foundation work, renovation, additions, etc. Here we mean scoundrels who use rocks for pillows, disciples who are solid as a rock but also dense as a rock, a tomb hewn from rock and covered by a stone at Jesus’ death, and a stone that was rejected that becomes the cornerstone of our lives. How do we meet God in the rocks? What rock will be the structure for our life?

September 25 - Blockhead - Matthew 16:13-20 and Psalm 81

October 9 - Cavemen - Matthew 27:57-61 and Isaiah 32:1-8

Adult Sunday School: September 18-October 23

Continental Connections: Themes from the Life and Writings of Karl Barth and Eugene Peterson and What We Can Learn From Them

From May through July, Andrew and family traveled through Switzerland and Montana. Andrew's study for his sabbatical was to walk through the life of Swiss theologian Karl Barth and then to see the influences of Barth upon the Presbyterian minister and Montana native Eugene Peterson. Over these six weeks, Andrew will present stories from the lives of both men, tales of his journeys into their homelands and even their homes, and draw out lessons that might generate faithful living in us in the direction of the God we meet in Jesus Christ. Teacher: Andrew Whaley / Room: Fellowship Hall

Adult Small Groups

Our Adult Small Group lessons are based on the Sunday sermons and scripture. Being a part of a small group is an experience rich in personal connection and spiritual growth. In small groups we discuss what is shared in worship, therefore the experience of worship is more deeply ingrained into our minds and hearts. Small Groups resume the week of September 12. Be thinking about what small group you are interested in joining. All are welcome!

  • Monday 10:30 AM– 12:00 PM – Facilitator: Andrew Whaley, room 201 or Pastor’s Porch
  • Tuesday 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM – Facilitator: David Dixon, parking lot
  • Tuesday 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM (women’s group) – Facilitator: Jennifer Bryant and Anne Moore, in various homes (Contact Anne or Jennifer if you are interested in joining)
  • Wednesday 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM – Facilitator: Leigh Sackett, room 102

Opportunity for Generosity & Mission Updates

Generosity Campaign – Celebration Sunday, October 16

Join us on October 16 for Celebration Sunday! This is the final Sunday of our "Built on the Rock" series and our Commitment Sunday when we turn in our financial pledges for the 2023 year. Please be sure to bring your pledge card that Sunday (or turn it in beforehand) and plan to stay after the 11:00 worship service for a congregational lunch. This is a day to celebrate God's faithfulness, and we have invited representatives from area mission partners to be in attendance, both those supported through our annual budget and through the generous gifts of the RCPC endowment. We hope you will eat with us and learn more about how we are partners in our community to bring hope, healing, and reconciliation to our city.

House of Bread

House of Bread has begun its fall session with a large number of students and we are in need of a couple more mentors. The only qualification to serve as a mentor is a willingness to engage in a relationship with one of our students and the time commitment is one hour per week from now until Thanksgiving. Mentors set a meeting time with their student so scheduling is flexible. For more information, contact Lisa Goad (houseofbreadroanoke@gmail.com).

Sudanese Mission Update

This is Salwa, who we have helped replace the things stolen from her home. At last, something good to celebrate! Salwa Abdallah, 31, clutches a certificate celebrating her U.S. citizenship during a naturalization celebration in council chambers. Abdallah who came to the United States from Sudan said she has lived in Roanoke for seven years. "I am excited, I want to vote, now I can do," she said about the right she gained once becoming a citizen.  Katie Hedrick, community inclusion and language access coordinator with Roanoke, at right, passed out the certificates.
