- WHAT YOU TOLD US: Yesterday’s Daily Pulse asked you about your thoughts on the Chamber’s daily newsletter. Here’s what you told us: 63% of respondents said they want the Chamber to keep the updates coming, and that they find them helpful and informative. 26% said keep them coming but not as often. 11% said they are looking for more information and that the Chamber’s updates are not informative enough or don’t have the right information.
- NEWSLETTER FREQUENCY CHANGE: Based on member feedback, we’ve made the decision to move our newsletter to a three-times-per-week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
- ATLANTA FEDERAL RESERVE CHAIR TO JOIN RELAUNCH FLORIDA CALL THIS WEEK: Atlanta Federal Reserve President and CEO Dr. Raphael Bostic will join the Florida Chamber for an important discussion on the economy this Thursday, June 25 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. EDT. - PROVIDE ANONYMOUS FEEDBACK OR QUESTIONS ON ISSUES OF RACE AND BUSINESS: As a precursor to Wednesday’s Crossroads workshop, we are giving members and the community the opportunity to anonymously ask questions and make comments. We will include as many of the questions and comments as we can in the discussion among our six panelists. Our goal? To provide a form for safe, authentic, productive conversation on the challenges we face at the intersections of race and business. Register here.
- REPORT CARDS ARE IN: The Florida Chamber and U.S. Chamber have released their annual legislative report cards, which “grade” lawmakers based on their votes on pro-business legislation. Each member of Alachua County’s federal delegation received the U.S. Chamber’s Spirit of Enterprise Award and the majority of the Alachua County state delegation received A’s on the Florida Chamber’s Legislative Report Card. The 2020 Census Needs Your Help
We are making strong progress with the 2020 Census. We’ve jumped ahead of the state and are neck and neck with the nation, with our completion rate at 61.1% (the nation stands at 61.6% and Florida at 58.8%.) Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to help our community!
Now the
2020 Census needs your help in another way
, as they prepare to send Census takers out into the community later this summer and into the fall. The Census will be training these valued employees over the next two months, and is looking for local conference space to do so.
Training sites are needed beginning on June 26th and continuing through mid-August. Ideally, the site would have two rooms available from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., have parking nearby, wifi access, air conditioning and restroom access. To meet physical distancing requirements, one trainer will work with just three trainees per session, and the trainer will clean and disinfect the space prior to and following each session. Any conference room that normally accommodates 15 or more guests will be large enough. Alachua County Library and Florida Museum receive NEA Big Read Grant
The Alachua County Library District and the Florida Museum of Natural History received a $15,000 National Endowment for the Arts Big Read grant to launch a dynamic community reading program on the memoir “Lab Girl,” by award-winning scientist Hope Jahren. The two organizations will launch “Lab Girl” programs in the fall.
From September 2020 through February 2021, the Library District and museum will present programming surrounding Jahren’s captivating biography including virtual programs, panel lectures, and workshops. The project will provide opportunities for participants to engage in discussions on “Lab Girl” themes including fighting stereotypes, cultivating friendships, following your passions, and living with mental illness.
The NEA Big Read offers a range of titles that reflect many different voices and perspectives, aiming to inspire conversation and discovery. The main feature of the initiative is a grants program, managed by Arts Midwest, which supports community reading programs, each designed around a single National Endowment for the Arts Big Read book selection. This year, 84 organizations were selected to receive grants ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 for projects.

Oak Hammock names new CEO
Troy Cannaday has been named chief executive officer for Oak Hammock at the University of Florida, according to the Oak Hammock board of directors. The appointment was effective April 27.
When Jeff Hagen, outgoing CEO, announced his retirement over a year ago, the Oak Hammock board of directors conducted a national search for his replacement.
Cannaday comes to Oak Hammock from Capstone Village, a retirement community on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa, where he served as the executive director. He has a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation with a minor in gerontology from Lake Superior State University and a master’s degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University. He has spent more than 25 years working in the senior living industry.
“We conducted a thorough search for our new CEO, one who would be just the right fit for Oak Hammock,” Board of Directors President Donna Brown said. “We have accomplished many milestones with our staff and residents at Oak Hammock under Jeff’s leadership, and we are poised for the next chapter with Troy.”
