Fall fun is in the air in

New Brunswick!


Rutgers Parents and Family Weekend brings visitors to campus and town October 7-9 and alumni are welcomed back to the banks for Homecoming Weekend, October 20-22.


Check out a full slate of activities for both programs.

Enjoy the 2nd Annual Hub City Food Truck Festival in Boyd Park October 8 (raindate October 30), with a variety of food vendors, bouncy houses, and merchandise.


Don't miss New Brunswick Oktoberfest, a fall celebration of music, food, and community in New Brunswick’s City Center October 9. Enjoy a variety of local and traditional food, craft brews, German beers, and vendors


Attendees are encouraged to get into the spirit by wearing their best dirndl or lederhosen. The fun continues with a live music line-up that will keep you entertained all afternoon and features a broad mix of performances for all age groups, including traditional German music.


Activites include caricatures, airbrushing and face painting, stein holding competition, and kids crafts. Admission is free.

EVENTS, PERFORMANCES, AND FILMS

The annual Rutgers Jewish Film Festival features award-winning international films and engaging discussions with filmmakers and other special guests. Online ticket sales start October 6.


On October 6, Zimmerli Art Museum's SparkNight series celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day and the new exhibition, Locating Georgia: Selections, from the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection of Nonconformist Art from the Soviet Union, plus resources offered by RU Indigenous and RU Voting.


Rutgers Theater Company presents Three Sisters; Chekhov’s masterpiece of hope, regret, and the nature of love; October 13-16 at the Mastrobuono Theater on the Douglass Campus.


The Price Is Right Live™ at the State Theatre New Jersey October 13 is an interactive stage show that gives eligible individuals the chance to hear their names called and "Come On Down" to win. If you’re a fan of the show on TV, you’ll no doubt love this exciting, live (non-televised), on-stage version.


View the temporary installation of six life-sized statues by artist Seward Johnson located along George Street and Livingston Avenue through October 15. Take a self-guided walking tour and post your selfies with the statues to New Brunswick City Center to win prizes.


NBPAC presents three musical tributes this month: Best of the Eagles, the ultimate Eagles experience October 15; Frontiers, Journey tribute band October 21; and Soultown to Motown with The Sensational Soul Cruisers October 22.


The 41st Annual New Jersey Film Festival will take place on select Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October 16. Showings will be hybrid with select live screenings at Rutgers University. 


Ready for the Time Warp? The State Theatre New Jersey invites you to join the ultimate audience participation film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show October 22, starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Meat Loaf. Receive a FREE goodie bag of props (while supplies last), sing along to the songs, and dress up (or not)!


Town Clock Community Development Corporation presents Being Brave, an evening honoring survivors of domestic violence, October 27, at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick. Proceeds support programming for resident survivor families living at Dina's Dwellings and the Barbara Littman House.


DerpyCon is New Jersey’s anime, gaming, sci-fi, and comic convention, bringing every nerdy genre under one roof, October 28-30 at the Hyatt Regency. Held since 2014, DerpyCon has been providing New Jersey a premier geek event filled with panels, concerts, video gaming, cosplay, vendors, dances, LARPs, artists, and more.


Are you ready to bust a move? See the Hip Hop Fever concert, a celebration of Hip Hop music and culture, showcasing the Hip Hop pioneers of the '80s and '90s at the State Theatre New Jersey October 28.


Rutgers University Jazz Ensemble presents the annual Professor Fielder Memorial Concert, honoring the trumpet master and legendary educator William Fielder, at NBPAC October 28.


Legendary artist Johnny Mathis returns to the State Theatre New Jersey October 29 with The Voice of Romance tour. Best-known for hits like “Chances Are," "It's Not for Me to Say," and "Misty,” Johnny Mathis has recorded over 70 albums and has sold millions of records worldwide.

LECTURES, PRESENTATIONS, AND WEBINARS

Save the bees with the Bee-ginner's Beekeeping: The Basics of Apiculture Online Class through October 23. Participants can complete the course content (which will take approximately 16-17 hours) at their own pace anytime during the period the course is open. There is an optional live Q&A session with the instructors during which you can ask questions about the course content.  


Rutgers' Community Living Education Project and Disability Rights New Jersey offer "The Byte Size Lunch Series - Making Assistive Technology (AT) Work for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities." These easy-to-understand conversations show how to use solutions in the home, the office, and the community. On October 6, learn about "Supports for Individuals Who are Blind/Visually Impaired."


Artist Sheila Pepe and Zimmerli Director Maura Reilly discuss Pepe's work in the exhibition "American Stories: Gifts from the Jersey City Museum Collection" October 13 at the Zimmerli Art Museum. The exhibition includes a re-creation of Pepe's Tunnel (2005), an installation of shoelaces and nautical rope that references the mostly immigrant laborers who dug the tunnels between New Jersey and New York.


Attend the 2022 Middlesex County Business Summit October 13 at NBPAC, featuring topics such as: How Technology is Reshaping the Way We Do Business, 

Tomorrow’s Workforce – Today’s Challenges, and Getting Access to Funding – Venture Capital Edition.


On October 18, Join Rutgers' Community Living Education Project (CLEP) and Planned Lifetime Assistance Network of NJ (PLAN/NJ), for a "Person-Centered Life Planning: Securing the Future for People with Disabilities" webinar that will educate families who have a loved one with a significant disability.


The Rutgers Living History Society will host its Annual Meeting 2022 to present the Stephen E. Ambrose Oral History Award to Nobel Prize-winning journalist, oral historian, and author Svetlana Alexievich on October 21.


The Hall Mills Murder of 1922, which unfolded in the New Brunswick Area, is still unsolved. Revisiting it 100 years later, author Joe Pompeo, senior media correspondent at Vanity Fair, and guests Johnny M. Meyer and Karen Alvarado of Thinkery and Verse Theater, will present their views and processes with library archivist Kim Adams October 22 at the New Brunswick Free Public Library.


Rutgers' Eagleton Institute of Politics presents a new podcast, “This Moment in Democracy,” which analyzes current events and emerging themes in American politics and explores how we can reimagine democracy. See all the episodes, including the latest offering, "What Does It Take to Keep the Republic?"

FOR KIDS

Join Rutgers Geology Museum October 5 for Virtual Planetary Geology Late Night, an event all about planets, moons, and our solar system! This virtual, online event will include do-at-home educational activities, a trivia game, and a guest presentation about Mars. Free.


Art Together is the Zimmerli Art Museum's monthly drop-in family art-making workshop series. Join us October 9 for a new project inspired by works on view in the galleries, while spending quality time together. Free.


Get ready to sing, dance, and go around the world on the Hot Peas ‘n Butter “Back to the Land Tour!” at the State Theatre New Jersey October 23. Hot Peas 'n Butter is an award-winning, family music band that wows young audiences every year with their highly energetic and interactive roots music.


RU Rec Kids swimming lessons are back with several class offerings for children, including parent and child, preschool, teens, competitive edge, and group swimming lessons.


If you are an early educator and are looking for an engaging farm opportunity for young learners, Rutgers Farm on the Cook Campus offers tours for groups of all ages.

SPORTS AND RECREATION

Single game tickets are on sale for the 2022 Rutgers Football season. Upcoming opponents at SHI Stadium include Nebraska, Indiana, Michigan, and Penn State.


Fall is here and basketball season is just around the corner. Rutgers basketball packages are now available. Choose from season tickets, half-season, Big Ten, or Garden State packages.


Interested in starting a career in fitness? Take your first step and register for the 10-week National Academy of Sports Medicine Personal Training Prep Course this fall at Rutgers University. 


Yoga at The Yard on College Avenue continues on Sunday mornings.

SCIENCE AND NATURE

Rutgers Gardens; a 180-acre botanic garden adjacent to the Cook Campus with designed gardens, farms, plant collections, and natural habitats to explore; is open to visitors Tuesday-Sunday. Admission is free.


Cook's Market at Rutgers Gardens continues on Fridays, featuring more than 20 specialty vendors. Check Facebook for weekly vendors and specials.

COVID-19 RESOURCES

Keep our community healthy! COVID-19 testing is available in various locations throughout New Brunswick. Every Tuesday during the month of October, community members can receive a free COVID-19 test and on October 25 you can receive a free test or vaccine at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center (NBPAC).


Middlesex County has a variety of vaccination and testing sites. Vaccines are available to all county residents regardless of immigration or insurance status. They are FREE, no I.D. is required, and it’s strictly confidential. Eligibility information for the vaccine can be found here.


Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School’s Department of Pediatrics has a website with multilingual resources about COVID-19 vaccines for children and young adults. Resources are available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Tagalog, Hindi, and Korean, the top six languages spoken in New Jersey.

AROUND TOWN

Unity Square is looking for organizations to participate in the Annual Trunk or Treat Event at Lord Stirling School, where community organizations distribute treats from the trunks of their cars to New Brunswick Children on October 31. Participation is limited. R.S.V.P. by October 14 to Community Organizer Maria Martinez-Tomas at mmartineztomas@metuchencs.org.


Caring cooks are needed! The New Brunswick Ronald McDonald House on Somerset Street is looking for people to cook a meal for families who are staying at the house while their child is in the hospital.


Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is looking for volunteers for the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) which provides extra attention and care to older adults admitted to the hospital. Adults, including college students, are welcome. Volunteer shifts are available mornings, afternoons, and evenings, seven days a week.


The New Brunswick Community Farmers Market is open Tuesdays and Saturdays in the Market Pavilion, 178 Jones Avenue, and Wednesdays at Kilmer Square Park, 108 Albany Street.


Registration for the Rutgers-New Brunswick Winter Session 2023 is in progress! Winter Session is the opportunity to take a winter course while saving money with in-state tuition. Stay on track for graduation with Winter Session.
