Second Sunday of Easter
April 11, 2021
In this reading we hear of the enthusiasm and spirit of sharing and caring for one another in the early Christian community. The apostles continue their powerful witness to the resurrection. Greed and anxiety with regard to material possessions are overcome by grace. The author of Acts may present a somewhat idyllic picture, but there is no denying the power of the gospel to bring disciples to a profoundly new way of life.
The psalm celebrates the blessing of a harmonious people.
The theme of this passage is the word of life by which Christians are called to walk in the light of God. Confessing their sins, they and all others can find forgiveness through Jesus. The beginning of this letter leaves open the possibility that the word may be understood as Jesus himself, or Jesus as he is revealed in scripture, or in the bread of the Eucharist. When his followers share a common life in the light that is God, they can be free to be honest about their sins and then be cleansed from them.
Our gospel presents two appearances of the risen Lord to his disciples. The first takes place on the very evening of the day of his resurrection. The disciples are gathered in fear, but Jesus brings them peace, gives them their mission, and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. A week later, Thomas, who had been absent when Jesus first appeared and who doubted his resurrection, now knows Jesus by his wounds and worships him as his Lord and God. Future disciples will not have Jesus’ physical presence, but they will be blessed in their belief.

News from Fr. Dan & Carol
|
|
On Good Friday Carol and I shared the following news with the Bishop's Committee:
2 April 2021
Grace and Peace to you
Death and resurrection is a central feature of our Christian history. Our Christian hope and joy is that life and love have defeated death and despair. As we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus, Carol and I want to share with you that our 7-year adventure in Idyllwild is coming to end.
We have been discussing a return to the desert—for a variety of reasons—where we lived for 21 years. Unexpectedly, a property we were considering became available, we made a bid, it was accepted, and we’re now in Escrow (closing date is expected to be April 30, 2021). This is not how we had planned to finish here and move to the next chapter in our life together. But as we were recently reminded, when you have everything planned out, God is watching, loving, and laughing.
Though my leaving the Hill and St. Hugh’s may seem to be an end, a little death, the story of Good Friday and Easter Day tell us all that (abundant) life and (an enduring) love will always be God’s final word.
I have been in touch with the Bishop and The Rev. Canon Gwynn Lynch at the diocese. They will help you shape the future of St. Hugh’s. A saying that a cancer patient shared with me helped me through my serious illness in 2008 and has become my mantra whenever I have had to face an uncertain (i.e., not settled or expected) future: “I don’t know what the future may hold, but I know who holds it. And that makes all the difference.” God holds your future and ours, and that makes all the difference.
With my deepest respect and love for you all,
~Fr. Dan

Collect for the Second Sunday of Easter
Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ's Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. ~BCP 224
For the Mission of the Church
Everliving God, whose will it is that all should come to you through your Son Jesus Christ: Inspire our witness to him, that all may know the power of his forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. ~BCP 816

Thank you for your continuing support of St. Hugh's during the pandemic. Please continue to make your regular financial contributions to support the ministry of Christ through our St. Hugh's Church community. Make your donation online.
It seems we will be online well into 2021 (and maybe, forever, even after in-person worship is possible). Your support to reach those who cannont attend in-person—now and in the future—is vital. The Digital Media Fund is dedicated to establishing, expanding, and maintaining the Digital Ministry of St. Hugh's. Your support is greatly appreciated. ~Fr. Dan
