Proteomics to the rescue – precision diagnosis for precision medicine
By: Michelle M. Hill, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Brisbane, Australia and Ellen D.
Although “Precision Medicine” is usually associated with genetics and genome sequencing, there are some diagnostic needs that can’t be answered by genomics alone. For example, aggregation of misfolded proteins in blood vessels can lead to systemic amyloidosis, and identity of the culprit protein determines the clinical course of action. Proteomics-based test is being used in several centers around the world to ensure amyloidosis patients get the right diagnosis and treatment. The importance of the test is illustrated by Joe Kochman’s story in this article by Associate Professor Michelle Hill and Associate Professor Ellen McPhail.
