Drink GNV is back - this time with more social distancing and COVID-19 precautions! Season of Drink GNV is our 2020 brewery event, happening once per week for five weeks at five of our local breweries.

First up during our Season of Drink GNV is Blackadder Brewing Company. Blackadder Brewing Company has been a great part of our Greater Gainesville Community since December 2016 but owners, Chris and Sissy Hart, have been brewing for over a decade. Collectively, they have earned over 30 medals in homebrew competitions throughout Florida and the US. Needless to say, they bring a lot of knowledge, experience and passion to their brewery. Blackadder features Belgian inspired beers in an Old World atmosphere.

We invite you to join us for a flight, a pint of your choice, information on the brewery and brews from Chris and mingling with community members. Your ticket also includes a raffle ticket for the chance to win fabulous items! Snacks and water provided.

Chamber Honors Local Heroes During Veterans Event
 
On Friday, November 13, 2020, the Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce celebrated some of our community’s honorable veterans and veteran-friendly organizations at the second annual Veterans Appreciation event, presented by VyStar Credit Union.
 
The event, held at Santa Fe College with proper COVID-19 precautions, was aimed to embody the Chamber’s continued gratitude and support for those who have served to preserve our freedoms, including those in the greater Gainesville community and worldwide.
“Today is about recognizing the men and women who serve and have served in the US Military, including our veterans, active-duty service members, guardsmen and reservists,” Chamber CEO Eric Godet said. “It is their service and sacrifice that protects our country and keeps us safe.”

2021 Chamber Diplomat Applications Now Being Accepted

Are you interested in becoming more involved with the Greater Gainesville Chamber? The Chamber Diplomat Committee is now accepting applications for new Diplomats. Chamber Diplomats are a group of representatives from member businesses who volunteer as an active extension of the Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce staff.
 
Their mission is to cultivate, promote and maintain a positive relationship between the Chamber, our members and the community. Chamber Diplomats meet frequently to discuss the missions of the Chamber and several diplomats will attend every event to connect, refer and help ensure every member of the Chamber is getting the assistance they need. Participation in the Chamber Diplomat Committee is open to anyone who has been a Chamber Member for at least one year and is a Member in good standing.  
 
Applications are due by close of business on Wednesday, November 25.

Alachua County Public Schools’ food service director wins top national honor
 
Maria Eunice, Alachua County Public Schools’ director of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Department, has won the highest national honor from the School Nutrition Association, sponsored by Basic American Foods.
 
Eunice has been named the winner of the prestigious Golden School Foodservice Director of the Year Award, the highest honor in the FAME (Food Service Achievement Management Excellence) Awards competition. According to the School Nutrition Association’s website, the award “recognizes outstanding achievements in leadership, spirit/dedication, innovation, community involvement and the bettering of the lives of students across the country.”
 
“We are so proud that Maria’s been recognized,” said Superintendent Karen Clarke. “She always goes above and beyond to support schools and children, and instills that same ethic in the people in her department.”

University of Florida Campus Master Plan Public Workshop
Monday, November 23, 6 p.m.
 
The University of Florida will be reviewing the campus master plan that describes the projected growth for the University of Florida main campus and 13 Alachua County satellite properties for the next 10 years. (See maps below) This plan focuses on the areas of land use, transportation, housing, capital improvements, conservation, recreation, infrastructure, utilities, urban design and academic facilities.
 
A public workshop on the campus master plan will be held on November 12, 2020 at 6:00 PM via digital media technology.
 
The workshop is an informal information session with opportunity for questions and answers. Interested parties who cannot attend this workshop are invited to submit written comments to Linda Dixon, Director of Planning, at [email protected] or P.O. Box 115050, Gainesville Florida 32611.

New Food Park and Event Venue, Midpoint Park & Eatery, to Open in the Gainesville Innovation District in March 2021

A new permanent food truck park and event venue is coming to Gainesville! Midpoint Park and Eatery is set to open in the Gainesville Innovation District in March of 2021. 

Described as a laidback, outdoor park for Gainesville residents to gather, eat, and mingle, Midpoint will feature four unique restaurants located in permanent food trucks on site.

In addition to the four food trucks, Midpoint will include seating for up to 100 patrons, a green lawn for guests to play and lounge, sun shades, and misting fans. Following COVID-19, a stage will be built so guests can enjoy live entertainment.

Construction recently commenced on the park, which is located at 931 SW Second Avenue next to UF Innovate | The Hub. It will be located within one mile of the main UF campus and downtown, making it an ideal lunch or dinner spot for both UF students and faculty as well as those working downtown and in the Innovation District. The park, which will be both pet- and family-friendly, is expected to be open for business seven days a week.

Two of the four restaurant spaces have already been leased by poke bowl restaurant Da Kine Poke and Mexican fusion restaurant Mexi Cocina. Two restaurant spaces remain available for lease for restauranteurs looking to join Gainesville’s newest food park concept.

Through community generosity, Peaceful Paths provides support for over 100 families during the holiday season. Florida Museum to offer virtual holiday camps in November & December

Students aged 6-10 are invited to enjoy virtual holiday camps with the Florida Museum of Natural History on Nov. 23, 24 and Dec. 21, 22. Dive into the sciences with these virtual sessions designed to educate and excite children about their natural surroundings. Topics include hiking, the beach, outer space and trees. Pre-registration is required, morning sessions are for ages 6 and 7 while afternoon sessions are for ages 8, 9 and 10. Millions of Americans have already received their Economic Impact Payments (Payments) authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act). The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) continues to calculate and automatically send the Payments to most eligible individuals, however some may have to provide additional information to the IRS to get their Payments. The deadline to request your economic impact payment is Saturday, November 21, at 3 p.m.
