The Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN) Conference
Black Lives Matter in Waldorf Early Childhood Classrooms and Communities
In February, three of our Children's Garden Teachers attended the Annual WECAN Early Childhood Conference with approximately 900 teachers from North America.

In their winter newsletter, WECAN Coordinator Susan Howard wrote:
"This event was a historic moment in our collaborative work toward greater Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Access in our movement. We centered our colleagues who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and for the first time, we invited a keynote speaker from outside the Waldorf movement to help us to expand our awareness and work toward the kinder, more compassionate society we all know is possible."
There were many workshops offered for teachers around the overall theme, including one by Lynn Turner (WWS Songbirds Kindergarten teacher) that came from her work with Antiracism.

From Lynn:
My workshop "Sowing Seeds of Social Justice in Waldorf Early Childhood Classrooms" was attended by 50 Waldorf Early Childhood Teachers. We worked with the living question: "How can we bring fairness, equity and antiracist values to the Waldorf Kindergarten to meet the 21st century?"

In our time together, I shared what are essential aspects of the inner and outer work of the teacher needed to cultivate a brave, kind, and equitable classroom centering antiracist core principles.

I am also a member of The WECAN Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Committee. We work with the WECAN Board to reimagine Equity and Inclusion.
Lynn and her sister, Kirsten, are the force behind the AntiRacist Table and the AntiRacist Table 30 Day Challenge.

Online Eurythmy Class
Preparing a Pathway to Eurythmy Series
A Eurythmy Spring Valley Winter Online Course

Friday March 5 & Saturday March 6

As the days steadily grow longer, yet the signs of winter still abound, we are offering the second course in our series, Preparing a Pathway to Eurythmy. By its nature, eurythmy draws on many avenues of complementary exploration that enhance our ability to enter its qualities of movement, perceptively. Our two-day online course in March 2021 is open to participants of all levels of experience. Recognizing the limitations of experiencing eurythmy online, we will be working with the foundational activities that are integral to developing eurythmic movement. Online Course Fee: $95

Admissions Update
Following the timeline set by the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW), we will send the first round of acceptances for the fall of 2021 this Friday, March 5.

We received an unprecedented number of applications this year. Going forward, we will continue to offer rolling admissions for select classes based on available space.
After acceptances are sent out, we are planning a few ways to connect with the families. If you are interested in helping us give a warm welcome, please email Alia Goodyear.
Alumni News
It's been a year since the concert celebrating our school's 50th Anniversary with Alumni ('97) Nick Kendall's band Time for Three.

Nick reached out to let us know that Time for Three co-wrote the music for the new movie LAND, directed by and starring Robin Wright. The movie premiered this year at Sundance, and is in theaters now. LAND will be available on demand this Friday, March 5.
From acclaimed actress Robin Wright comes her directorial debut LAND, the poignant story of one woman’s search for meaning in the vast and harsh American wilderness. Edee (Wright), in the aftermath of an unfathomable event, finds herself unable to stay connected to the world she once knew and in the face of that uncertainty, retreats to the magnificent, but unforgiving, wilds of the Rockies. After a local hunter (Demián Bichir) brings her back from the brink of death, she must find a way to live again. Watch the Official Trailer

Needle Felted Toadstool Tutorial
from WWS Parent Anja Caldwell

Due to the pandemic, I make instructional video tutorials to go with my online classes. Usually I edit them to speed through the chatty parts, to keep them short. This video is unedited and reminds me of counting sheep, or a bit like an homage to Bob Ross, though I am certainly no Bob Ross.

If you are also in need of some mindfulness, enjoy this complimentary copy to make mushrooms to go with your gnomes.

Be well,
Anja Caldwell

Book Discussion Class: Mindful of Race: Transforming Racism from the Inside Out
from WWS parent Michael Danzansky

Hello Waldorf - I hope you will consider joining this upcoming discussion class, Mindful of Race.

Michael Danzansky is facilitating a 6 week exploration of Ruth King's book, Mindful of Race: Transforming Racism from the Inside Out. The book invites us to consider how we relate to race, our unconscious beliefs and preconceived notions, and then how we can use mindful practices to create more compassion, awareness and healing.
