MONDAY MEMO
7th graders worked on a problem solving task in Advisory with Mr. G this morning. Sawyer, Julian, Henry, Quinn, Gabe, and Clint were the start of a long line of students who needed to make it across a series of islands and bridges that presented various challenges as they progressed.
Greetings!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Yard Sale efforts this weekend. We have lots of after school clubs up and running, although there will be schedule changes this week due to the half days and conference meetings.

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
PLAN FOR WHAT YOU NEED
Please help students to think about the day ahead and what they need to be prepared:

Musical Instruments: Band and instrument lesson students should be sure they have their instruments with them on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and their lesson days.

Dress for the Weather: All PreK-8th grade students should have what they need to be outside during the school day no matter the weather. With the exception of lightening, thunder, or temperatures well below freezing, our teachers plan to continue with outdoor learning opportunities.
YARD SALE
What a great success! Donors, thank you for giving us so many items that led to about $6500 in sales, which helps the parents meet their fundraising goal, and also serves the broader community, and our relationship to it, very well. Also, the work you put into presorting your donations really helped Friday go smoothly, we thank you for that effort. Set Up Volunteers, wow, you set up displays of items that were organized, attractive, and easy to browse, and the shoppers noticed and commented on it. Thank you for all of your energy last Friday. Sale Volunteers, you were engaging and helpful and had fun doing it, which makes the event all the more successful. Clean Up Volunteers, thank you for showing up on a beautiful afternoon to do the un-fun work of hauling things from here to there so that we were prepared to have school again today. We appreciate all of you!

If anyone has a few minutes this week to stop and straighten up the free pile, consolidate and ensure things are on pallets, and bring empty boxes to our recycling dumpster, that would be very helpful, and attract more passersby to stop.

So you can get some tasty treats at the Pavilion during the game and know it is going to a good cause!
6-8 ADVISOR NOTES
6-8th grade advisors will be sharing some informal written notes with students this week about how their teachers say their classwork is going. The intention is for those students to bring them home and share them with parents, so that you can better prepare comments and questions at conferences on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. So please ask your middle schoolers if they got those notes and to see them!
3-5TH GRADE SWIMMING
Our 3-5th graders will be not swimming this Friday, October 7, because of parent-teacher-student conferences. Other swim dates are: October 14, 21, and 28. There will be no swimming on October 7 because of our Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences.
EARLY DISMISSALS THIS WEEK
K-8th graders will be dismissed at 12:30 on Thursday and Friday so that teachers can prepare for conferences. We will have supervision for students after the early dismissals this week at 12:30 on Thursday and Friday. Please email Sean if your child will attend so that he can plan effectively for the long afternoon.

Preschool has a regular full day on Thursday, and an early dismissal at 12:30 on Friday. As this is a change to the calendar, there will be on charge for the preschool after school program until 4:15. Please email McKenna to let her know approximately what time you will pick up your child that day.
K-8 PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT CONFERENCES
Conference meetings will be held in-person this week, and we look forward to talking with parents more about your individual children, the strengths and challenges we've noticed already, and what you can help us understand about them as learners from the home perspective. Students, we encourage you to join the conversations; since they are about you, we care about hearing from you.

  • 6-8th grade only: Wednesday, October 5, 3:00-4:30 pm
  • K-8th: Thursday, October 6, after early dismissal for K-8th grades at 12:30 pm
  • K-8th: Friday, October 7, after early dismissal for K-8th grades at 12:30 pm

Elementary families: each teacher has created a sign up link to share with you.

Middle school families: please use this link to sign up for 15 minutes to speak with all the teachers at once. We find that the discussion is more valuable all together. Note the section above about "6-8 Advisor Notes" in preparation for the meetings.

Extended Day Program: We will have supervision for students after the early dismissals this week at 12:30 on Thursday and Friday. Please email Sean if your child will attend so that he can plan effectively for the long afternoon.
RACE BACK TO SCHOOL
We want to connect with 1) the outdoors 2) local organizations that have similar missions to ours and 3) more students from the NEK who would be a good fit with our mission. So please plan to register some or all of your family for Race Back to School! Don't worry, you don't have to commit to staying the whole time. Choose if you want to walk, run, or ride. Choose your laps and fun stations. Choose when you're done.

In advance, seek pledges from friends, family, and neighbors. Dollars per lap? Dollars per point? Dollars per hour? A total gift for meeting a goal? Funds raised by your pledges will go directly to Riverside's growing scholarship/tuition assistance program.

If you don't want to hit the trails, pledge to support someone else!
SCHOOL PICTURES
School pictures will be taken by Whipple Studios on Friday, October 14, starting at about 8:15 am. Order forms were sent home last week. Please return them ASAP; do not wait until school picture day to send them in. If you do not want to order any pictures, simply write that on the order form and return it.
CALENDAR UPDATE
We are excited to be planning a winter music performance and art show for Tuesday, December 13, at 5:30 pm at the Lyndon Institute Auditorium.
WINTER & SPRING CLUBS
Sean is collecting ideas about after school clubs from students, teachers, and most importantly, parent volunteers. If you have an idea of an activity you might like to lead with students after school, especially during the later winter and spring seasons, even if it's only for a few sessions, please email him with the following information:
  • activity topic
  • preferred season (all year, winter, spring, etc)
  • preferred day and time
  • suggested age range
  • cost or materials potentially needed
POLICY UPDATES
As part of the regular work of the Governance Committee of the Board of Trustees, we have updated a few policies to bring them into line with the most current state-suggested language. These updates will be referenced in next year’s Family Handbooks. The two recent updates are in the areas of restraint (which we do not do), and bullying/hazing/harassment. Full text is available at the links, the updated language has minor differences from the previous versions.
RECORDER CLUB
K-2 Recorder Club will meet this week on Monday from 3:15-4:00. Please plan to pack a snack and have your child picked up when it ends, not for them to return to the Extended Day Program.
TENNIS CLUB
K-8 Tennis Club will meet this Wednesday at Powers Park from 4:00-4:30, weather permitting. Parents will need to coordinate transportation to and from the park. Email Sean if the ride coordination is challenging or if your child needs to borrow a racket.
MTN BIKE CLUB
K-8 Mountain Bike Club will ride again this Wednesday. We will plan to meet at the Inn at Mountain View Farm parking lot and ride the trails around there to get familiar with the Race Back to School course. Both the beginner and intermediate rides will start at 4 and end around 5:15.
HIKING CLUB
No 4-8 Hiking Club this week because of the early dismissal on Friday.
CRAZY 8s
3-5th grade Crazy 8s club is full, thank you for all the sign ups and interest in math. We are excited to have two middle school students helping as junior coaches in order to accommodate the large number of participants! The club will not run this week because of Caroline having middle school conferences, the first meeting will be next week: Wednesday, October 12.
FLU VACCINE CLINIC
Little Rivers Healthcare has graciously offered to help put on a flu vaccine clinic on campus if there is enough interest. They would need consent for anyone under 18 and would also need insurance information. If you are interested, please email Roy by Wednesday so we can figure out if there would be enough participants to make this worthwhile.
SCOUTING
The Green Mountain Council invites all youth ages 5-18 to join in the scouting fun! Check out this flyer to learn more about the scouting opportunities in Lyndonville, St. Johnsbury, and Danville.
