Board Discussions:

Adjusted timeline for Kansas Redesign:
As a result of the Governor's Executive Order to close schools, the Kansas Department of Education (KSDE) has extended the deadline for Apollo II applications to June 15, 2020.  Walnut Elementary was approved for redesign at the February 26, 2020, board meeting while Emporia Middle School (EMS) was prepared to present to the board last night. With the occurrence of the executive order, EMS is focusing its efforts on the continuous learning plan in preparations for classes resuming Monday and will present to the board at a later date.

Governor's Executive Order to Close Schools:
Kevin Case, Superintendent and members of the Executive Cabinet gave updates and answered questions regarding current challenges and discussions due to the Governor's Executive order as a result of COVID-19.  Below is a summary of their discussion.
  • Kansas school buildings are closed for the remainder of the year and learning will take place but in a different way.
  • All hourly employees will be paid as they were working and certified staff will be paid out through their contracts.  Everyone has been helping as they are able to during this process.
  • The district has been following the Emergency Operation Plan (EOP) which includes direction and protocols for coordination, prevention, communication, and core services in an emergency.
  • Online learning will occur for students who have internet and packet learning for those who do not have internet.
  • On Monday, teachers will reconnect with their students and touch base with families to continue building relationships while also introducing technology.
  • On Tuesday, academic instruction will begin and staff will work to help students and parents become more comfortable with the new learning environment.
  • An internet google website of resources has been created to communicate directly to principles to share with their staff.  Click here to visit the site
  • The food service team has been exceptional in getting thousands of meals out to students.  There are a lot of people involved in making this happen.
  • There will be no student or staff travel until further notice.
  • The Continuous Learning Plan is due to KSDE on April 8th.
Case, thanked all of the employees who have worked tirelessly in helping to move the district forward through these challenging and fluid times.  Case and the Executive Cabinet is extremely grateful to everyone who has remained flexible and determined to focus on student and staff safety and minimize any impact on student learning as the new normal begins for instruction on Monday, March 30.

Build For The Future:
Kevin Case, Superintendent, gave a brief update on the Build For The Future construction projects.  The schematic plans for Walnut Elementary have been completed and are being reviewed by McCownGordan.  The Early Learning Center is in the design phase and currently making progress towards the completion of this phase.  Case thanked the staff in both buildings for their dedication and support as progress continues to be made. A meeting will be held next week to look at the progress being made towards Emporia High School and the next steps.
