Celebrate YOUR public lands this National Public Lands Day at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary!
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is partnering with local organizations to host a variety of stewardship activities that will give members of the community a chance to enjoy their federal lands and take an active role in their conservation!
Read below for the projects available so far, and sign up to participate in the project that's best for you! Reach out to the coordinating partner organization directly for questions about each project, and we'll see the whole family out for National Public Lands Day!
Project 1: Did you know sand prairies are one of the most endangered habitats in the U.S., with less than 4,000 acres remaining in Illinois and Missouri combined? This unique prairie community provides vital habitat for hundreds of plant and animal species. At the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary, we have approximately 25 acres of sand prairie managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Join our Rangers and Biologists for a morning of planting native plants and help restore this vital and rare habitat right here in the Riverbend area!
Project 2: Join the Piasa Palisades Sierra Club for their 16th Annual Mississippi Earthtones Festival Great Mississippi River Clean-Up! Participants will board boats and clean trash from the Mississippi River's shorelines and islands only accessible by water! Gloves, lunch, and a free t-shirt are all provided by the Sierra Club!
