Principal's Update: Handbook Changes

Principal Message
 Hello CMS Families,

As we approach the start of the new school year, I would like to ensure each family is aware of important changes made to the CMS handbook. It is important to review these changes to ensure a smooth transition into the school year. There will be grade-level assemblies on the first day of CMS to welcome students and go over the updated school-wide guidelines and policies. We are asking for your partnership in communicating these expectations to your student. Your assistance will help us soar to new heights as we continue to create a safe, responsible, and kind environment at CMS.

Warmest regards,

Felicia Thames Ed.S, CMS Principal
Handbook Changes
Cell phones:
Usage of cell phones during the school day is prohibited, if students are observed using their cell phones during the school day, the phone will be confiscated and parents/guardians of the student will be responsible for picking up the phone at the end of the school day. If a message needs to be relayed to a student during the school day, parents or guardians should contact the main office.

Video Recording:
Students must not record or distribute recordings, photographs, or videos of anyone without their prior consent. Any making or dissemination of a recording must not disrupt the civil and respectful atmosphere toward teachers, other employees, and students alike. Recordings that are considered disruptive include, but are not limited to, recordings that are demeaning, derogatory, or sexually suggestive toward a student or employee. This policy applies to District-issued and personal devices that are used to make the recording.

Behavior Protocols:
Please note, there will be no planning room for the 22-23 school year.
Students who fail to adhere to school-wide expectations will have an administrator enter their classroom to assist with issues that arise during the school day. Students will reflect on the incident that occurred and develop a plan to ensure success in the classroom or other designated area. Families will be notified of the occurrence and plan.
If distractions continue, the student will be assigned a structured day(s), completing classroom assignments in a designated space. Negative behavior that persists after all proactive measures have been made could result in, but not limited to:
Meeting with the student, parent/guardian, administrator, and classroom teacher to develop a behavior contract that is agreed upon by all parties
Parent will shadow their student for a school day
Suspension etc.

Backpacks and lockers:
Students are not allowed to carry backpacks during the school day. Students may use a backpack to transport books and belongings to and from school. Backpacks must remain in the student’s lockers between 9:20 a.m. and the end of the school day. Handbags smaller than a school textbook may be carried at school. Exceptions to this policy may be granted to students with special circumstances.
