$50M Slated for CA Arts Relief in Major Advocacy Win
|
On Wednesday, a joint announcement was issued by Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon that they reached agreement on a package of immediate actions that will speed needed relief to individuals, families and businesses suffering the most significant economic hardship from the COVID-19 Recession. Included in the relief package is $50 million in grants for nonprofit cultural institutions.
"This is a huge win for arts advocates statewide who joined together to inform our elected leaders of the devastating impact the pandemic shutdown has had on the arts organizations in our communities," remarked ArtsOC President & CEO Rick Stein, who serves on the Board of Californians for the Arts, the statewide organization that led the effort in collaboration with California Association of Museums. "Soon after the New Year, Governor Newsom expressed great concern for the health of the arts sector in his initial proposal for COVID relief, but our data from the field showed that a larger sum was really necessary, and our collective impact made a real difference in helping the Governor and Legislative leadership understand that and to increase the amount of support. For that we are deeply grateful to them."

This program is a separate allocation of funds for CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS and is open ONLY to NONPROFIT, 501c3 organizations in the following general categories: Art Dealers, Theater Companies and Dinner Theaters, Dance Companies, Musical Groups and Artists, Other Performing Arts Companies, Promoters of Performing Arts, Sports, and Similar Events with Facilities, Promoters of Performing Arts, Sports, and Similar Events without Facilities, Agents and Managers for Artists, Athletes, Entertainers, and Other Public Figures, Independent Artists, Writers, and Performers, Museums, Historical Sites, Zoos and Botanical Gardens, Nature Parks & Other Similar Institutions.
Grant sizes are based upon annual revenue in the 2019 tax year
- $1,000,000+ - grant size $25,000
- $100,000 to $1,000,000 - grant size $15,000
- Under $100,000 - grant size $5,000
Eligibility is based upon loss of revenue as follows:
- Grants prioritized on documented percentage revenue declines based on a reporting period comparing Q2 and Q3 of 2020 versus Q2 and Q3 of 2019.
- Eligible nonprofit cultural institutions shall complete a new application for the grants allocated under this subdivision, even if they already applied in Rounds 1 and 2 of the COVID-19 Relief Grant Program.
- However, if you RECEIVED a California COVID-19 Relief Grant, you are NOT eligible to receive additional funding.

National Endowment for the Arts Entry Level Grants:
"Challenge America" Guidelines Now Available
|
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), our federal arts agency, has issued guidelines for its Challenge America grants program, which offers support primarily to small organizations for projects in all artistic disciplines that extend the reach of the arts to populations that are underserved. Challenge America features an abbreviated application, a robust structure of technical assistance, and grants for a set amount of $10,000. Challenge America guidelines include important new details on eligibility requirements, as well as the program description, project types, and what we mean by "underserved". A live webinar with tips and Q&A will be held on March 10 at 3pm ET. Please register in advance to attend. The application deadline is April 22, 2021. Arts Orange County strongly encourages local arts organizations that have not previously received a grant from the NEA, to learn more about this program and to apply!

ArtsOC Welcomes 3 New Board Members
|
At its meeting on February 17, Arts Orange County's Board elected three new Directors:
MARLEENA BARBER, Director of VSA Orange County, an organization that provides arts, education, and cultural opportunities by, with, and for people with disabilities, making the arts accessible to people of all abilities. A professional vocalist and cabaret artist, Barber is legally blind from Albinism and a leading advocate for promoting positive disability awareness. She also serves as Consultant to Orange County Department of Education.
G. PATRICK GANDY, an accomplished composer, conductor, and arranger who has worked with major pop and jazz artists and on national Broadway tours, is the Founder & Executive Producer of The Silence is Broken, a nonprofit organization based in Dana Point that uses the creative and performing arts and new media as tools to rally community and inspire investment in them to cure problems once labeled intractable.
WALTER YENKOSKY, Chief Operating Officer of OC Music & Dance, a non-profit community music and dance school in Irvine that offers performing arts classes for all ages and levels. A military veteran (US Marine Corps), he received his MBA and Bachelors degrees from Pepperdine University, and is active in the American Legion.
