City of Tallahassee
Community Hurricane Prep Webinar
June 11, 5:30 pm
Hurricane season begins June 1 and the City is actively preparing for the upcoming storm season. Residents should also begin making their emergency plans and preparations. To guide residents through the planning process, the City will host two community workshops as part of the Neighborhood Plan for Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) program . Typically, the PREP workshops would be held in person, but in light of COVID-19, they will be hosted via webinar this year.

During the virtual presentation and discussion, participants will learn what supplies they should have on hand, steps to protect their home and resources available that can help them and their neighbors organize before and after a storm. The free webinar will be hosted at 5:30 p.m. on June 11. If you are planning to join the webinar, please complete this brief registration form . Registration is not mandatory, but encouraged.

The Neighborhood PREP toolkit and details about how to participate in the webinars are available at Talgov.com/PREP . Click here for the Neighborhood Prep Guide: Get Ready to Prep!

Lifelong Learners Via Zoom!
Florida at the Crossroads of Empire, offered Thursdays, June 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 1:30-3 p.m. via Zoom.  We often think of Florida as a tranquil, sun-soaked paradise. Before it became a United States possession in 1821, however, it was an international borderland, and not exactly a quiet one. At various times since the 16th century, Florida has been a strategic game-piece for Spain, France, Great Britain and the United States in their respective efforts to control North America. Join Dr. Josh Goodman, staff historian at the State Archives of Florida, for an exciting short course exploring Florida’s imperial past, ranging from the competition between Spain and France to settle the Atlantic coast to the quirky circumstances that gave Florida its present borders. A Zoom link to join the event will be emailed to you the morning of each class. It will be the same Zoom link for each class, but it is mailed weekly in case new participants are joining the class or participants have lost the link. This class will be recorded for future viewing on demand. To register - click here!
Mars: Past, Present, and Future, offered Tuesdays, June 16, 23 and 30 from 1:30-3 p.m. via Zoom. The planet Mars has drawn the attention of humans for at least 3,000 years. Included in this class will be the following:(1) the successes of scientists such as Copernicus and Kepler will be addressed, (2) the objectives and results of the many recent missions to Mars, and (3) the goals and plans of the 2020 Mars mission. By integrating physics, astronomy, geology, biology, and mathematics, the relatively “new” subject “Space Science” helps us understand the nature of science. Instructor is Dr. Steven Blumsack. A Zoom link to join the event will be emailed to you the morning of each class. It will be the same Zoom link for each class, but it is mailed weekly in case new participants are joining the class or participants have lost the link. This class will be recorded for future viewing on demand. To register - click here!

Brainteaser Challenge
Let's keep our minds challenged and active!

The correct answer(s) to last Wednesday's riddle (submitted to Braingle.com by lessthanjake789) is four word answers with the same seven letters: Gallery, Allergy, Largely, and Regally. And the top three responders are . . . Vickie Goodman (in only 14 minutes), Michael Clark, and Jim Kallinger.

Here's a new brainteaser! Add It Up 8 (Submitted to Braingle.com by Scubee)

Beginning with "de", add letters from the given pool to create a seven-letter word which means "to withhold something". Do not rearrange the letters as you go.

Pool: E R V P I

1) DE
2) _ _ _
3) _ _ _ _
4) _ _ _ _ _
5) _ _ _ _ _ _
6) _ _ _ _ _ _ _

The hints below give definitions/clues for each additional word, except for the last one.

2) a small cube marked on each face with one to six spots
3) to plunge into water intentionally
4) to frighten or prod into moving in a certain direction
5) to infer; to deduce

Share your answer with Nancy Gentry, Special Projects Assistant (Nancy.Gentry@talgov.com) ! We will give you a "shout out" during the Friday Update on Facebook , if you are among the first three people to get the answer. Find more brainteasers at www.braingle.com
