Meet FEI Member Diane Kelly – Sharing Her Talent for the Greater Good!

When she is not serving as Vice President, Finance and Administration for Motivation Excellence, Diane Kelly is donating her time and her talents in many ways that serve others.

Diane has a strong belief in education, continual learning, and giving back to the community. She enjoys volunteering at numerous Non-Profit Organizations that support these beliefs. This includes organizations like the Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club (NBGC) where she volunteers as their Treasurer and also serves on the Executive Board. The Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club is focused on enhancing the well-being and the untapped potential of its members and their families by providing a safe and supportive environment for developing lifelong values learned through teamwork, leadership development, and sportsmanship opportunities created through the club. In addition, Diane belongs to numerous professional associations and actively participates in several peer groups.

Through these affiliations, Diane gives back to the community by serving as a mentor, advocate, or volunteer in whatever capacity needed. The overarching theme all these groups have in common is they all provide an opportunity to learn and grow. And, in return Diane is able to experience the joy that comes from seeing the growth in each person and knowing that she made a difference.

Diane’s day job aligns with her personal values too. Motivation Excellence is a leading provider of engaging incentive programs and meetings/events/group travel that inspire extraordinary performance. Their core values of respect, integrity, trust, and exceeding expectations all speak to the larger goal of always remembering it’s about people. She has extensive experience in directing accounting, finance, and operations in diverse business models by providing hands-on management. Key elements of focus include financial analysis and planning, cash management, and systems development and implementation. She has built a solid reputation for upholding fiscal integrity, collaboratively working with all stakeholders, and forwarding innovative solutions. Business aside, Diane likes to inject fun into her life as an accountant at Motivation Excellence. She enjoys finding little joys outside of just balancing spreadsheets! She is active with the in-house events committee which plans frequent activities and gatherings to keep the culture at work fun-loving and collaborative. In her downtime, she enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with family especially her two grandsons…and, of course, Go Hawks!

FEI Members are not short on awesomeness! Diane Kelly has shown us another reason to be proud of this great community of financial executives.

Thought Leadership - The Highs and Lows of Manufacturing’s Recovery
Industrial activity has regained a lot of ground since last spring, but COVID-19’s impact is still being felt in some sectors. Key points include:
·       U.S. manufacturers have made strong gains since the start of the pandemic. By mid-summer, factories were operating at 70% capacity, up from a low of 59% in April.
·       However, the recovery has been uneven. Aviation manufacturing has been hard-hit by a decline in air travel, and energy is experiencing a glut as more commuters work from home.
·       Manufacturing’s return is important. While the sector only accounts for 11% of GDP, its expansion has fueled almost 20% of U.S. economic growth over the past 15 years.

The Role of White Americans in Disrupting Systemic Racism
Through our “Uncomfortable Conversations about Race” series, FEI Chicago is proud to support our members with resources and forums that better equip you to lead your business and serve your community on the important topics of equity, economic inequality, and racial injustice.

Systemic racism is, by definition, any organization, program or policy which favors one group over another. Systemic racism exists where one population group receives a disproportionate share of opportunities, access or resources (e.g. jobs, mortgages, or education). In order to understand the origins and functions of systemic racism in America, we must understand our history and how it continues to shape society today. In this session, our 3rd event in the series, Dr. Donna Marino will share insights into our history and the role White Americans play in disrupting racist systems. While this candid conversation may be uncomfortable, it promises to be thought-provoking and actionable.

This session features a 30 minute presentation by Dr. Marino and 45 minutes in small group breakouts.

Dr. Donna Marino is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Executive Coach with additional certifications in Positive Psychology, Coaching, and Clinical Hypnosis. Read more about Dr. Marino.

We look forward to engaging with our members on this important topic, and to supporting each other in the conversations ahead.

FEI Chicago Chapter Annual GAAP/SEC Update With Crowe LLP
Held September 17, 2020

With the Coronavirus pandemic and its impact on businesses, major FASB projects like lease and long-term insurance contract accounting, hedging and current expected credit losses (CECL) have been delayed at least a year primarily for private companies. So why have the GAAP/SEC update this year? The pandemic and its impact on the economy has impacted numerous FASB disclosures in formal audited financial statements including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Triggering events requiring goodwill and intangible impairment reviews
  • Required “Going Concern” disclosure about the impact on a company’s financial statements
  • A multitude of impacts related to lease modifications and terminations, both under the new lease standard and even if the new standard has not yet been adopted
  • Accounting for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and related forgiveness

These impacts as well as several other impacts to accounting for income taxes, stock compensation, uncollectibles, revenue recognition and internal controls were covered.

Held September 24, 2020

Harry Kraemer executive partner, Madison Dearborn Partners and a Clinical Professor of Leadership at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management shared content from his new book, Your 168: Finding Purpose and Satisfaction in a Values-based Life.

Despite our good intentions, many of us experience a chronic imbalance shared between the desire to live our values and the distractions and never-ending to-do lists that can get in the way. In Your 168: Finding Purpose and Satisfaction in a Values-Based Life, readers learn how to pursue a values-based life by identifying and committing to their values and priorities. Harry uses personal stories and insights from others to help readers discover the dissonance between what they say is most important and where they actually devote their time.
