I Timothy 2:1-7

"For Kings and All Who Are in High Positions"

Rev. Mitch Maxted

Message from the Pastor

Some of you have expressed an interest in how I spent my sabbatical summer, so I'll tell you a little about it. My biggest hope was that I'd be able to spend time with family and friends, and I'm happy to report that I got to be with all three of our children, my parents, my sister's family, my brother, and even with two cousins I hadn't seen in decades. I put over 11,000 miles on my car as I drove to Los Angeles, to Iowa twice, to Indianapolis, and to Atlanta. For the first time, I was able to visit the apartments where Motoki and Mana live (in LA and Brooklyn, respectively), and to meet their new roommates. Being with family was the very best part of my sabbatical experience. I am so proud of all three of our kids!

Seeing some old friends lifted my spirits as well. I got together with a couple of high school classmates at their home just outside of Flagstaff, Arizona. I got to be able to spend time with several seminary friends. Another joy was being able to attend the annual reunion of Y-Camp staff alumni at the beautiful camp along the Des Moines River north of Boone, Iowa, where I spent many summers as a camper, camp counselor, and Youth Conservation Corps crew leader. It was great seeing a good buddy I hadn't seen since we'd worked at camp together more than 40 years ago!

I worshipped in various places, including my home church in Marshalltown, Iowa and Brookhaven Christian Church in Atlanta, Georgia (where a good seminary friend serves). I also enjoyed worshiping online with Bethany Christian Church in Cleveland, Ohio, where another seminary friend has been leading and preaching powerful messages for 25 years. Locally, I enjoyed worshiping with our Christian sisters and brothers at First United Methodist Church in Round Rock and Peace Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Austin.

During my sabbatical, I also read a couple of helpful books, and I look forward to sharing some things about them in the future.

Also, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that I will now be working on Mondays. I used to take Mondays and Saturdays as my days off each week. From now I am going to try Friday and Saturday and see how that works. Beyond the obvious advantage of having the two off days together, I am hoping this will ease the stress of "Tuesday overload" related to newsletter, class, and other events. Naturally, I will continue to attend most Saturday events, such as our monthly Men's Breakfast and other special meetings, and will do my best to find ways to make up for that lost rest during the week.

Let's keep good lines of communication open! Please don't hesitate to reach out to me via email or text or phone call with your prayer needs, your concerns, and your dreams for the future of RRCC.

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Mitch

September 14 - Carolyn Mehlow

Explorers Sunday School Class

The Explorers Sunday School class is studying the Bible one book at a time. We are finishing up 1 Corinthians in the next couple of weeks and will start on II Corinthians after that. We invite all who are searching for ways to grow in their Christian faith to come join us. We have great discussions as we don’t understand all we read. We talk it out and learn from each other. We have John MacArthur’s study guide to help us. We are ordering new books if you would like to have one. We meet in the room south of the library. Join us on our journey.

New Social justice Study Begins Next Tuesday, September 20

Our RRCC Social Justice Action and Study Group will begin a new book study on September 20. We will continue to meet Tuesdays at 11:00 a.m. These meetings are zoom only, as our participants live far and wide. Please call or email Pastor Mitch if you'd like to join the study, so he can make sure you receive the zoom link each week.

The book is How to Be A Social Justice Advocate: Create Positive Change in Your Home, Community, and World. The book, by A. Rahema Mooltrey, came out less than a year ago.

Calling All Greeters

In our continuing efforts of “Embracing our neighbors with Christ-like love”, we want to ensure that our visitors and members are greeted each week on Sunday morning. We are putting in to place the following greeters “schedule”.

Each month the following ministry/team will be responsible to have two people present by 10:30 in the welcome center to open doors for people to enter, greet them by name if possible, offer coffee, show them where the rest rooms are etc.

The schedule is as follows:

  • September - DWM
  • October - Disciple Men
  • November - Deacons
  • December - All Book Clubs Wired word, Social Justice, Thursday book club.
  • January - Vision Advisory/Worship Teams

Greeters duties include but are not limited to:

  • Wear name badge.
  • Ensure coffee supplies are filled.
  • Open front door for those who need assistance.
  • Have name tags available for those that don't have one.
  • Have pink cards in hand for those who request to have a joy or concern shared.
  • Welcome all around!
  • Clean up coffee station and coffee pots between when service starts and when service ends.

Thank you for all you do!

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

PUT YOUR TRUST IN ME so you can discover My unfailing Love shining on in the midst of your troubles. When you are struggling with discouragement, you need to assert your trust in Me over and over again. It is vital to remember who I am: Creator and Sustainer of the universe, as well as your Savior, Lord, and Friend. You can count on Me because My Love for you is unfailing. It never runs out or grows dim, and it is not dependent on how well you’re performing. Just as “I am the same yesterday; today, and forever” so is My perfect Love.

“Lift up your soul” to Me—waiting in My Presence with no pretense and no demands. As you dedicate time to waiting and worshiping, I gradually transform you and open up the way before you. I will not necessarily reveal future things to you, but I will “show you the way” through this day—step by step. So trust Me wholeheartedly, beloved, for I am taking care of you wonderfully well!

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing live, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.---- Psalm 1143:8

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things and through whom he made the universe—Hebrews 1:1-2

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.----Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for your faithful love and guidance, and for so wholeheartedly guiding me and caring for me so wonderfully well. Amen

JESUS ALWAYS

Embracing JOY in His Presence
