Dear St. John's Parishioners and Friends:
From the Deacon:
In this week’s reading from Hebrews, we are reminded of the power of faith. Our Old Testament heroes, “who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.”. And despite many of these heroes, never seeing the outcome of their faith, we are encouraged to “let us the cross, run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” It is so easy to let the everyday worries and concerns, interfere with our faith. Faith in the love of God and his Son Jesus Christ who came to us to show his undying love for us on the cross. We too are called to share this faith in God’s love for all by caring for our neighbors. St John’s has continued to be very responsive to this call to share God’s love with our neighbors, not just in word but in action!
This week we are asking you to share God’s love with those who cannot afford to buy their children’s school supplies. Please donate by bringing a school backpack with paper, pencils, notebooks, and crayons with you this Sunday and we will arrange to have them delivered to a school in our area where the children need these supplies.

Thank You and the peace of God which passes all understanding be with you!
Peace,
Rev Deacon Steve

Update on the Creation Care Garden, August 4
Good morning!
Today I was able to harvest 8 pounds of produce from the garden on the church patio and deliver the vegetables and herbs to the WFCM food bank. Our plants yielded the following: 13 Bell Peppers, 56 Jalapenos, 2 Cucumbers, 1 pint of Cherry Tomatoes, 1 Medium Bag of Green Beans, 4 Small Bags of Basil, and 1 small Bag of Pineapple Mint. Estimated value is $60.00.
I also reseeded one of the raised garden beds.
The girl scouts have been very helpful by watering the garden daily in this hot weather. The deer continue to "prune" leaves from the pepper plant and sweet potatoes, but do not damage the vegetables. They avoid the jalapenos. :)
Have a blessed day,
Bev

We have all seen the horrors of the war in Ukraine. If you would like to help those in need, Episcopal Relief and Development is working closely with a group that is on the ground in Ukraine. You can make a contribution on their website at https://www.episcopalrelief.org/ Please continue to keep the people of Ukraine in your prayers.
A Prayer for all those involved in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen

Due to the current increase in COVID19 transmission rates in Fairfax County, the Vestry has decided to continue the masking policy during worship services. We will monitor the transmission rates and modify this policy if things in our area change. We will use the data from the Fairfax County Health Department to make these determinations. This applies to our worship service. The policy of our ministry partners may differ, so please respect them by masking while in other parts of the building. You should also mask If you need to be in close proximity to others in an enclosed space. You never know who may be unable to be vaccinated or is otherwise compromised. Thank you for your cooperation. We also continue our "safe" way of having communion by using the individual cups for the bread and the wine.
|
|
The services continue to be live streamed at 9:30 AM on Sunday morning, and they can be watched later as well. On Saturday, we will resend the link, along with a link for the bulletin and the lectionary class.

SUNDAY WORSHIP & EDUCATION
|
|
We can prepare our hearts & minds by reading ahead
for the Sunday Service lesson
The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
August 14, 2022
The First Reading: Isaiah 5:1-7
God nurtured Israel, his chosen people, to bear good fruit, but the vineyard of their lives has been wayward. The path to redemption starts with release to the wild — even destruction.
The Psalm: 80:1-2, 8-18, BCP p. 702
The Second Reading: Hebrews 11:29-12:2
Trials in life are opportunities to cling more closely to God and to allow sin and evil to melt away from our lives.
The Gospel: Luke 12:49-56
True discipleship can be lonely and isolating, there is no way around it. Trying to weasel out of hardship with divining does not work.

Retired Bishop of Liverpool Will Serve as Visiting Bishop in Diocese of Virginia
The Rt. Rev. Susan E. Goff, Bishop Suffragan and Ecclesiastical Authority, announces with thanksgiving the appointment of the Rt. Rev. Paul Bayes, retired Bishop of Liverpool, as a Visiting Bishop in the Diocese of Virginia. Bishop Bayes will serve in the Diocese from mid-September through December 5, 2022. His wife Kate will accompany him.
Bishop Bayes has been a frequent visitor to the Diocese of Virginia for many years in his role with the Triangle of Hope. The Triangle of Hope is a covenantal community between the Dioceses of Liverpool (England), Kumasi (Ghana), and Virginia dedicated to transforming the long history and continuing presence of slavery in our world through repentance, reconciliation and mission.
"I'm most grateful to Bishop Susan and her colleagues for this invitation, and I am looking forward very much to spending time in the Diocese and to ministering in whatever ways will help you all,” said Bishop Bayes. “Over my eight years as Bishop of Liverpool, the companion link with Virginia, and the wider relationships of the Triangle of Hope, sustained and fed me as well as blessing my Diocese. Kate and I are excited at the prospect of building on these relationships and of reconnecting with our friends in Christ across the Diocese of Virginia. It will be great to be with you. Please be sure of our prayers for you all!"
With the retirement of Assisting Bishop Porter Taylor in June, Bishop Bayes will provide vital support to the Diocese through visitations to churches, diocesan gatherings and other ministries of the Episcopate.
Bishop Goff served as a Visiting Bishop to the Diocese of Liverpool from 2015 through 2019. She visited for two or three weeks each year in such ministries as speaking at a clergy conference, leading a pre-ordination retreat, meeting with women clergy, preaching at the Cathedral and sharing in services of Confirmation. “I am delighted that we now bring this dimension of our relationship full circle as Bishop Bayes joins in our ministries for a season,” Bishop Goff said. “I look forward to seeing how the Holy Spirit will continue to lead and guide us in this time.”
During their months in the Diocese of Virginia, Bishop Bayes and Kate, a stained-glass artist, will reside in Arlington.
