Student Research Symposium
International Centre for Community Music
CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS CLOSES ON JUNE 30TH!

Remember there is only one day left until the call for contributions for this year's Student Research Symposium, delivered in partnership with Sound Sense, closes!

This year's symposium will focus on the theme of positionality.

This theme will provide a frame in which to explore the positioning role of the community musician, as practitioners and researchers, asking questions which might include but will not be limited to:

-What effect does the defining and enacting of our role as community musicians have within our respective contexts?
-How can we critically evaluate our positionality, taking into account the specific social, environmental and political parameters within which we operate?
-How does our definition and enactment of our position as practitioners and researchers affect, for example, our use of language and communication, and ultimately impact the scope and foci of our research?

This year's student research symposium will take place on Monday 6th December & Tuesday 7th of December. Further details of the submission process can be found here:
Call for Chapters
Points of Disruption in Music Education Curriculum
We are pleased to announce a call for chapter proposals for a new book tentatively entitled “Points of Disruption in the Music Education Curriculum.” In this text, we seek to identify specific opportunities to challenge our professional assumptions and habitual practices as music educators at both the P-12 and post-secondary levels. Institutional systems often serve to perpetuate the status quo, reducing the agency of those who work within those systems and minimizing opportunities for change. By thoughtfully identifying and addressing points of disruption, which we define as deliberate efforts to break conscious and subconscious habits or cycles of self-replication, we can work to drive positive change in our field.

This edited text is intended to be used by curriculum makers in music education at any level to identify places and ways to challenge the status quo in music education curricula. Each chapter should contribute to this purpose by identifying specific images or models of disruption in music education curricula, situated in a specific context. Chapters should be thoroughly grounded in the extant body of research literature and should also contain clear action items that curriculum makers can use to implement these disruption models in their own settings. These action items can and should include both practices that are applicable in specific curricular settings and those that may be applicable across a wide range of situations. We also encourage authors to consider a wide spectrum of action steps, from those that are more immediately practical to those that are aspirational. Bringing the applicability of each specific approach to disruption into the foreground for the reader should be a high priority of the author(s) as we attempt to identify ways in which readers can address these points of disruption in their own settings. Research reports (including reports of action research), reviews of the literature, and other formats are welcomed, subject to the above guidelines. We welcome submissions authored or co-authored by inservice P-12 music teachers and others outside the realm of academia, to include a more diverse range of perspectives on current practices in music teaching.

Chapter proposals should consist of extended abstracts of no more than 750 words (not including title page or references). The title page should include authors’ names, contact information, and institutional affiliations (if appropriate). The body of the proposal should clearly delineate a) the point of disruption that is being identified in the curriculum, b) the setting in which this model of disruption is most applicable (e.g. elementary general music, secondary music, undergraduate music education programs), and c) a clear description or demonstration of how action steps and applications will be foregrounded for the reader. All submissions should be written in English. Proposals should be submitted to mhaning@arts.ufl.edu no later than August 15, 2021. Authors will be notified of the editors’ decisions as soon as possible after the submission deadline. Final versions of accepted chapters should be submitted no later than December 1, 2021, and the anticipated publication date is mid-2022.

Questions or concerns may be directed to the editors. We look forward to highlighting the ways in which our profession is working to break free of traditional constraints and challenge the status quo.
