The Latest News and Updates from the SED

Dear Colleagues:

Only war has previously prevented AMA Conventions; now we are at war against a virus. The June in-person AMA Annual Meeting is CANCELLED-SUSPENDED. Previously, only two AMA Annual Meetings have been cancelled, 1861 and 1862 due to the Civil War and the Annual Meeting for 1945 was moved to November.

We are meeting by computer this year; see the linked Speakers Letter, below. AND our election campaigns and elections will also be by computer. Dr. Dalton will send out any future pertinent information to the SED Board of Directors.

The AMA Annual Meeting will be June 7, 2020, Sunday, starting at 2PM Central. It will be by computer, platform still to be announced, but you will have plenty of time to get set. We urge close contact with your Delegation Chair. Enter the meeting about 1:30 PM. The basic flow of the meeting will be induction of officers, maybe some announcements and scientific and business reports about COVID-19, a Report and voting for the Reference Committee F Report, video play of AMA Board candidate two minute speeches, voting including runoffs and/or Pop Ups.

The election votes can ONLY be from Delegates. You will be assigned a security code based on your name and/or Medical Education Number. Should a Delegate be absent, then the Alternate needs to be named at least 2 hours before the Meeting Start, for security code assignment. The voting and security codes are being managed by an outside vendor using a large digit random number generator. The email address for the AMA HOD office is hod@ama-assn.org .

We want your vote for our slate of excellent candidates. This year we field only a few, highly qualified candidates that deserve your utmost support. Since you cannot be with your AMA friends in June, please help us spread the word among all your AMA House of Delegates contacts. Feel free to forward this Newsletter, as you might wish.

We will miss you. We always look forward to our special SED family times at the AMA Annual Meeting. BUT you can still COME to the famous SED Ice Cream Social; watch your emails for more info and instructions coming soon. Smile.

Please note another essay from our Front Lines Heroes fighting the Corona Virus, this time from Dr. Costabile.

We are also pleased to announce that the SED Board of Directors, at its meeting on May 5, elected Clay Hays, MD of Mississippi the new SED Vice Chair.

As we develop other communications or platforms before the Virtual Meeting, we will keep you posted through your SED leadership team.

Stay Safe.

John Poole, MD, Chair-elect

It's April 7, 2020. Within 24 hours of getting a phone call to duty, I’m standing in line at Fort Dix waiting to be processed and moved into buses for transport to New York City. The United States Army is in the lead to mobilize reserve forces to help New York City hospitals overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients. Make no mistake, this is war, and we nurses and doctors are the combatants.

Since we can't be together for our usual Ice Cream Social we thought we'd show you the Best Ice Cream Sundae in every state ! Enjoy and don't forget to keep an eye out for upcoming info on our virtual Ice Cream Social!
