Greetings to all:
As the end of the year approaches, we are always mindful and begin to look back at the previous year, as well as look forward to the upcoming one. I say that knowing that Thanksgiving has just passed us on the calendar, the ground is snow-covered, and a busy and joyous holiday season is upon us. At our December meeting in the next week or so, the AIA Michigan Board of Directors will welcome three new members and bid adieu to four outgoing members. On behalf of the Board, I would like to heartily thank Past President Norm Hamann, AIA, Laurie Hughet-Hiller, AIA, Kim Montague, AIA and Randy Seiss, AIA for their many years of service as leaders to AIA Chapter and Michigan boards. These leaders have spent countless hours serving membership, and I certainly express our gratitude to them.
As I began the process of looking back at the past 12 months, I looked back at last November’s message from Mr. Hamman. He mentioned the drop of 15,000 in architectural employment numbers, but a hope for a slow steady recovery. At that time there was an uneasiness in the air about our future. We all recall our thoughts and feelings then. The biggest indicator of the profession that I can point out is the AIA’s Architectural Billings Index. The index has been steadily positive for eight straight months now, currently at 54.3. The Midwest is actually the strongest at 61.9. (Simply put, anything above 50 indicates positive growth.) Despite that there is still a general uneasiness about the economic conditions with high fuel costs and inflation. I would still say that the look forward is still optimistic. Conditions are still improving, and there seems to be no lack of work for the upcoming year. We are looking forward to all of your continued success and your participation at all of next year’s events. We also hope that many of those events will be in-person events. After all, one of the most memorable statements that I can recall from the Leadership Conference is that meeting virtually cannot replace the exchange of energy that occurs when we meet face-to-face. We look forward to the fellowship that we have missed for too long.
As I mentioned subtly above, we are replacing four board members with three new ones. Dan LaPan, AIA who is currently and will remain the Regional Representative to the AIA National Strategic Council has graciously agreed to represent the Saginaw Valley and Northern Michigan components on the Board. EMERGING PROFESSIONAL CORNER |
Hi folks,
Well, I guess this is the end. No, I’m not talking about the end of the calendar year. But rather the end of my term as your Young Architect Regional Director for the great State of Michigan. These past two years have flown by, and I’ve learned so much about the AIA and its members during my term. As I leave my post, I think back to all of the people I’ve met, and friends I’ve made along the way. There are a lot of good memories I will take with me. But before I go, let me give you one last update as to what is “in the news” regarding the Young Architects Forum.
First, we will have 22 new YARDS in 2022. Seems kind of fitting really. I don’t know who my replacement will be, but I look forward to what exciting things they bring to the table. Looking at the latest YAF agenda of things to do, they will have their hands full that’s for sure. Much more to come on that.
Second, Connections Q3 issue has been officially published. This issue covers the latest and greatest topics related to Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. One of the articles covers our last webinar titled “So you want to…design for all.” This was a great discussion between three highly accomplished designers and our wonderful moderator, Yiselle Santos Rivera. Third, in October, AIA MI hosted the Large States Meeting. This was a productive discussion where we discussed topics ranging from how the role of Interior Designer is defined in this industry and how their scope and the Architect’s scope are divided or overlap; to a discussion about the status of things in our industry going on two years of working with Covid in our lives.
