Special Church & Society
Zoom Presentation
with Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, II
Tuesday, May 4 at 7 pm -
|
Asbury’s Church and Society Committee is thrilled to announce that United Methodist pastor and U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II will be the next in our series of Social Justice presenters, speaking to us via Zoom on Tuesday, May 4 at 7:00 pm.
Representative Cleaver will speak regarding his views and experiences related to prejudices, discrimination, and how to effectively deal with people who have very different views than we do, from both a clergy and public servant standpoint. As a highly respected faith leader, political representative, past chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, outspoken advocate for equity and justice - one who received a death threat after the recent riot at the U.S. Capitol - Rep. Cleaver brings a wealth of experience and knowledge on these issues.
You may register for this event in advance, at https://www.visitasbury.org/emanuel-cleaver-presentation/. This event furthers our Lenten social justice reflections, but we hope you will join us regardless of participation in the Lenten study. We look forward to having Rep. Cleaver as our very special guest!

"C" is for Cookie...and Cross-Lines!
Help the Asbury volunteers with cookie donations when they serve lunch at Cross-Lines
on Thursday, April 29!
|
THANK YOU to everyone who signed up to help volunteer at Cross-Lines on Thursday, April 29! We have a full group, and are looking forward to serving lunch to needy folks that day!
What we'd love, though, is if a few of you (five, to be specific) would be able to donate some cookies to hand out at lunch that day. We found multi-packs of single-serving sizes of Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookies at Costco that work perfectly for this! If you'd like to help out with cookie donations, would you mind signing up at this link, under "Cookie Donations?" https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508094CA4A62DABF49-crosslines

Sign Up for the 2021 Midwest Mission Distribution Center (MMDC) Trip!
Travel Dates are September 26 - October 1, 2021
|
The Asbury Mission Team would like to invite you to participate in their 2021 trip!
The MMDC is one of nine cooperating depots in the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Supply Network. MMDC distributes UMCOR supplies in response to disasters within the United States and around the world. Supplies include a variety of kits, some of which address household cleaning, layette, students, hygiene, etc. Also, the MMDC uses recycled bleacher wood and donated counter tops to build children's desks for mission schools. The MMDC also refurbishes sewing machines and bicycles for distribution across the globe.
Depending on the needs for the day and the missionaries’ skills and abilities, work projects will be set up for individuals and groups. Missionaries assemble kits and desks, sort and count items, sew, stuff mailings, repair bicycles and sewing machines, help unload items, fill shipping containers, organize materials, and whatever the most pressing needs are at that time. No matter your skills or abilities, there is an important job that needs you!
This year’s trip will take place September 26 through October 1, 2021. Trip costs will include: A $42 material fee for each missionary; five nights of lodging at the Baymont Inn at a reduced rate of $60/night; and transportation and meal costs. All participants are encouraged to use scholarship funds available through the Asbury Mission Team.
Prayerfully consider this mission opportunity. If you are interested in participating, or have additional questions, please contact Dan Clevenger at 785-640-8823 or by email at [email protected]. Reservations required by April 30, 2021.

Sign Up for In-Person Worship on Sunday, May 2 at 11:00 am!
Have you received both of your COVID-19 vaccines (or single shot, if you have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine)? Are you really missing the community that comes from meeting face-to-face? Then join us for worship in person!
We are starting up weekly worship services at 11:00 am on Sunday morning in the Sanctuary, beginning Sunday, May 2. We'll require ongoing registrations on a week-by-week basis, beginning each Monday morning and ending at the end of the day each Thursday, so that we ensure that we have an accurate count for the weekend! (We're opening up registrations a little early for this first Sunday back, but beginning the week of May 9, we'll have registrations from May 3-6; for May 16, we'll have registrations from May 10-13, and so on.)
To ensure social distancing requirements are met, the in-person service will have a max of 80 seats available each week. Face coverings will still be required for everyone while on church property and for the entire service.
If you're not ready to worship in person with us yet, we totally understand. We will still have weekly online worship available on the Asbury website, just as we have done throughout the past year. Visit www.visitasbury.org/worship to tune in!

Our faith word for April is "Share," and we'll focus on how "the community of believers was one in heart and mind (Acts 4:32)."
Share is the perfect word for Easter, and the weeks thereafter. It is during this time that the disciples were to go and tell others - share - about the resurrection. Little children may have trouble with the concept of witness, but they will understand sharing. Children of all ages can be encouraged to share how much they love Jesus and how much Jesus loves them.
