A Message From Dr. Brost
|
Dear Parents:
Thank you for supporting your student(s) during these months of virtual learning. We know that balancing this, along with all of the other demands that the health crises has created, has been difficult. We are proud of the effort that has been put forth to engage in some learning during this time. Year-end information is provided below. Unfortunately, details regarding school activities that typically occur later in the summer and information about the start of school next fall will not be available until that time when health officials are able to provide direction. We will continue to monitor Phase 1 and the Forward Dane plan as it unfolds.
Parents of seniors should have received instructions for graduates to submit a video clip in cap and gown. Those were due on May 25. Staff, video club students, and class officers are working on the virtual graduation video. It will be available to view at 1:00 p.m. on June 7. Specific instructions for accessing the video will be coming. A communication was also sent with directions for the collection of school materials from seniors on Tuesday, June 2. Personal items from lockers and classrooms will be returned at this time as well. Seniors will continue to have access to their school email and google docs until August 1. Ms. Cowell sent out an email with details for backing up information. Sometimes students are still communicating with post-secondary institutions in August, so please remember to take care of this by the end of July.
June 5 will be the last day of virtual instruction for 9
th
- 11
th
graders. All Knowledge and Skills assignments need to be completed on this date. There will be opportunities for students to make up some math and English credits via summer school. Counselors will communicate with students who would benefit from summer school. The collection of school materials and distribution of personal items from lockers will take place on June 9 & 10. Details with hours assigned by alphabet will be communicated this week.
We hope that your family is able to find some forms of rest and relaxation this summer. With many of the typical summer activities being limited, students will need to find creative ways to recharge. Please reach out to us if there is assistance we can provide over the summer months.
It has been a privilege to serve as MGHS principal for the last 16 years. The decision to retire was not an easy one. I will miss the interactions with students. They made coming to school every day a joy. Thank you for instilling good values and for make education a priority.

 After 16 years of service in our community, Dr. Brost is retiring. We thank him for his leadership and everything he has done for the MGHS staff and students.
We will welcome Mr. McGrath as the high school head principal on July 1st.

Seniors - Final Transcript Requests
At the end of the semester, seniors who will be attending a 2-year or 4-year college must request their final transcript to be sent to the school where they will be attending in the fall.

If you initially applied using the Common Application (or SendEdu)
, you must indicate your chosen school in the Common App/SendEdu and then send your school counselor an email indicating which school you chose to attend. Your counselor will then submit your final transcript through Common Application/SendEdu.

If you did not apply through the Common App, you will request your transcripts through
Parchment. You can do this at any point during this semester, but choose the "Hold For Grades" (versus send now). Ms. Boyde will release final transcripts through Parchment when they are ready.
Schedule Changes for the 2020-2021 School Year
Schedule changes will be considered after the first four days of the fall semester. If you are still interested in a change at that time, please schedule an appointment to see your school counselor. The only exception to this policy are level changes (for example, AP US History to US History or reverse). In this case, we will review the request after we receive parent/guardian permission. Remember, all changes are made on a space-available basis.
Summer School
If you have failed a required English or math class during the first or second semester of the 2019-2020 school year, you may be eligible to make up this credit in summer school. Please contact your school counselor or case manager for information.

| Virtual Summer School 2020 |
Monday, June 22 -- Friday, July 17
(no class Friday, July 3)
Monona Grove High School provides summer school for additional academic
support for students who did not pass a specific course and need credit remediation. This year, summer school will be held online. Registration for the credit recovery classes at MGHS summer school will continue to be done through our MGHS counselors in Student Services. Parents will receive communication from the student services department stating that your child needs to sign up for summer school and how to register.
In addition to credit recovery classes, Monona Grove School District is offering a free summer ACT Prep class for all interested 11th graders. The class will run online this year. The class covers all five of the ACT exam content areas: English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing. Students will work at their own pace to complete lessons and worksheets to develop subject area skills and enhance test-taking abilities. Teachers will also set up online real time meetings, both in group and one-on-one formats, to provide instruction. It's a great way to prepare for the high-stakes of the ACT exam, all with no grades, no cost, and no stress! If you are interested, you can sign up by emailing Michelle Boyde.
We are still hoping to offer our Speed, Conditioning & Agility and Weight Training program (starting no earlier than July 1), but it will
NOT
run through summer school. Registration for those sessions will be done through the MGHS Athletic Department. Please watch the

for more information on how to sign up for Speed, Conditioning & Agility and Weight Training (if it's happening).

At-Home Workout Plans
Do you have a student-athlete that is missing after-school strength and conditioning? Students can access at-home workout plans by following the Monona Grove Strength
Instagram account. The account name is mghsstrength.
There is also a
Google Sheet with cycles 1, 2, and 3 of at-home workouts as well as sprint training.
MGHS Summer Camps
Summer Camps have been postponed due to social distancing guidelines. If allowed, we will host camps in July and early August, and communication will be shared district-wide with dates and registration details.
Fall Sports Registration
Online registration for Fall Sports will open in early July, and registration will, once again, be completed through Infinite Campus. Fall Sport Practice Start Dates are as follows:
- Boys & Girls Cross Country - Aug. 17
- Football - Aug. 4
- Girls Golf - Aug. 10
- Boys Soccer - Aug. 17
- Girls Swim - Aug. 11
- Girls Tennis - Aug. 11
- Volleyball - Aug. 17
Pre-season parent/athlete meeting dates for Fall Sports will also be sent via Infinite Campus, so please keep any eye out for that message.

Sarah Schnell managed to earn an award from the 2020 SkillsUSA State competition that didn't even happen! She submitted a State Trading Pin design in February and brought home the bronze. Congrats Sarah! Check out this video that was produced to celebrate the 47th Annual SkillsUSA State Leadership & Skills Conference. Sarah's competition category is shown at the 10 minute mark.
Join us in wishing the SkillsUSA staff advisor, Mr. Richard, best of luck in his next adventure. He is moving out west and continuing his teaching career. He will be missed!

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, yearbooks will not be available in early June as they have been in past years. They will be distributed in August to SENIORS ONLY. There will be a schedule of pickup times according to last name.
Walsworth, the company who publishes the MG yearbooks, has partnered with Kudoboard to offer virtual yearbook signing. Learn more and sign up

 Monona Grove Community Effort
Though this pandemic has caused separation and angst within our community and throughout the world, there is not a more important time to be supportive and show camaraderie throughout the community.
Below is an online "Monona Grove Strong" apparel store. It is open through Monday, June 8th. Items will be shipped directly to your home.
All proceeds will be donated to food banks in Cottage Grove and Monona.
