RTMC November 2016 Newsletter

Happy Thanksgiving from Our Family to Yours

RTMC Friends,

John F. Kennedy once called upon us to demonstrate our decency of purpose, our steadfastness of resolve, and the strength of will inherited from our forefathers. This Thanksgiving, I'm grateful to see this very call being answered by RTMC investors, volunteers, and everyday supporters.

You give money despite having small margins, you give time when you have little for yourself, and you take up our cause of preserving safe, affordable, and healthy housing for all.

Because of you, we are able to be a blessing to others - fortifying the homes and shared community spaces of thousands across Montgomery County. The outcomes of your goodwill remind me of just how great it is when we all work together.

This Thanksgiving, I thank you and I thank God for our shared values of equity, compassion, respect, kindness, responsibility, justice, and service.

Sincerely,
Christina Betancourt Johnson
Executive Director
Best Practices and  BOLD Ideas Presented at RT National Conference

November 9 - 12, RTMC staff members attended the Rebuilding Together National Conference in Dallas, Texas. Staff spent 3 days hearing from other affiliates, exchanging best practices, networking, and having a great time exploring the city of Dallas!

Out of the conference came some great reports that shed light on the impact that Rebuilding Together affiliates across the country have on their communities. Ever wonder how we compare to other Rebuilding Together offices? Take a look at "Inside the Numbers," the affiliate trends report published by the national office. Then make sure to check out RTMC's 2016 Annual Report for an overview of the work we did last year.

As a result of the conference, we'll be integrating best practices, refining our service model and ensuring a stronger and more innovative approach to program delivery.
Congressional Bank Volunteers for 4th Veteran's Day Project

On November 11, 2016, volunteers from Congressional Bank joined Rebuilding Together Montgomery County staff and board members to help rebuild the home of Marine Corps Veteran, Mr. Gist. Volunteers arrived bright and early and ready to work. After a brief introduction, they split up into groups and completed tasks such as stripping the deck of old paint, painting the front porch trim, fixing a plumbing issue, and raising and re-securing the bedroom ceiling. Once the work was complete, volunteers enjoyed lunch while exchanging stories from their day of service.

Mr. Gist was more than grateful for the work done on his home. At RTMC, we are proud to serve veteran homeowners in need year-round, but are especially grateful to have the chance to serve on Veteran's Day. Thanks to Congressional Bank for their support  and to Mr. Gist and all of our veterans for their service!

How Will You Translate Your Compassion Into Currency This Holiday Season?

You're connected to RTMC because you think about other people and want to improve their condition.
RTMC clients are our neighbors in need.

As temperatures continue to drop, low-income homeowners who find themselves unable to afford critical home repairs will struggle to survive through the dangerously cold winter months. As you consider people in this community who need help, we'd ask that you translate your compassion into currency and donate to RTMC's mission driven work.

Our fall appeal letter is just days away from hitting your mailbox and one of our goals is to have every donor give at least 10% more than they gave last year. This may not seem like a lot, but it will help make sure low-income homeowners throughout the county have safe and healthy homes in which to live.

As we head into the holiday season, think of those who may need some extra help and consider donating to RTMC. Visit our online fundraising page to donate with ease.
Big News for the Montgomery County Government

This election season brought dramatic change not only on the National Level, but on the county level as well. We will soon see a three term limit imposed on county officeholders as well as the introduction of a publicly funded campaign system, meaning s ome of the County Council members will not be eligible to run for reelection at the end of their terms.

Here at RTMC, we will be sad to see elected officials go, but we look forward to developing meaningful partnerships with any new officials holding office. For an in-depth look at the implications this has for the county, check out what the Washington Post has to say.
