ArtsOC's VOICES Veterans Project Participants Offer Their Thoughts & Tips on Coping with the COVID-19 Crisis
ArtsOC's VOICES Veterans Storytelling Project - Coping with the COVID-19 Crisis

Military veterans who participated in Arts Orange County's VOICES Veterans Storytelling Project at  share what they are doing to cope during the stay-at-home directive caused by the COVID-19 crisis--and some inspiring words of advice. Many thanks to our veterans: Giovanni Berdejo-Gallegos, Dick Gray, George Davis, Carol Singleton, and Denton Knapp, to our program partners: Heroes Hall Veterans Museum at the OC Fair & Event Center, Tierney Center for Veterans Services at Goodwill OC, and to our funders: National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, Orange County Community Foundation, The William Gillespie Foundation, and Heroes Hall Veterans Foundation.
A Gradual Re-opening for Some--A Long Wait for Others
Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens in San Clemente (above) has re-opened its gardens  to visitors (though not the historic Ole Hanson home), with social distancing protocol rules in place. It is one of the first OC arts and culture venues to begin the process, following The Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, which presented drive-in movies and created a sculpture garden on its grounds. Mission San Juan Capistrano has announced that it, too will re-open to the public with protocols in place on June 13.

ARTS ORANGE COUNTY HAS CREATED A PAGE ON ITS SPARKOC.COM ARTS CALENDAR WEBSITE LISTING VENUES THAT ARE RE-OPENING--ALL ORGANIZATIONS ARE ENCOURAGED TO LOG ON AND POST THEIR INFORMATION OR CONTACT NICHOLAS THURKETTLE FOR ASSISTANCE.

Indoor visual arts venues still have a number of challenges before they can re-open fully. ArtsOC is working with Californians for the Arts and local OC museum and heritage site leaders to communicate to government officials how they can re-open safely.

Performing arts venue leaders are also meeting with ArtsOC to share ideas; like the museums, they anticipate being able to hold outdoor events, but the prospect of opening theatres and concert calls is far more challenging. Best practices from performing arts organizations around the world are being collected and shared, but most performing arts leaders believe that it will be very difficult to present live performances in their venues for the remainder of the year in order to protect the health and safety of not only their audiences, but the artists as well.
