Greetings from the Harraseeket Inn! February in Maine is known as the coldest month but it's also the most promising. The days are getting noticeably longer, the sun is higher in the sky and the shadows cast by the trees upon the snow on early mornings and late afternoons make winter seem like the most beautiful season of all. The photo below was taken this week by Cindy Morin in nearby Pownal, Maine and the play of shadows and sunlight upon snow and stones truly captures the clear, fragile beauty of a winter landscape. Meanwhile, Covid-2019 has morphed into Covid-2021, the vaccine rollout is successfully underway and we're all going absolutely stir crazy. Now is the perfect time to plan a road trip to Maine. Gas up the car, pack your bags with that winter bucket list and some warm clothes, and head to the Harraseeket Inn for a getaway that will recharge your batteries and restore your spirits. Take a hike at Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park on trails that skirt the ruggedly beautiful rockbound coast of Casco Bay. Bring binoculars and a bird book to identify wintering shore birds, and keep your eyes peeled for harbor seals. Don't forget to bring your best friend along, this state park is a doggie's paradise! Visit Wolfe's Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment and say hello to all the farm animals and staff. The kids will love making friends with the gentle Oberhasli goats and feeling how rough a young calf's tongue feels when it licks their outstretched hand! Lambing time is drawing near, and nothing is cuter than a newborn lamb...unless it's a newborn calf or kid. All the little ones are adorable!
Check out the fabulous winter sales at all the Freeport shops, and bring your doggie shopping, too. Most stores allow pets, including L.L.Bean's flagship store. Let your best friend track down some great bargains for you, and don't forget to visit the Pet Pantry for some special treats. If you're traveling to Maine from out of state, please call ahead to ask about any certification of COVID quarantine/testing measures currently in effect. We know many of you are calling about having received the COVID Vaccine and are anxious to travel. At present, the state guidelines require the same certificate of compliance to be completed, regardless of vaccine. We have heard this will be updated to allow for easier travel if you have received the vaccine but the compliance has not been updated from the state as of yet.
