The First Reading on the Day of Pentecost
|
|
We join the other churches in our diocese remaining closed for in-person worship and meetings as a way of expressing love of neighbor (by maintaining health and wellness within ourselves, our neighborhoods and communities during this pandemic). However, in this weekly newsletter find information and invitations to explore worship opportunities near and far. Find resources of prayer, study, and inspiration for action. Explore ways to connect with other Jesus-followers as you continue to "grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ." (See
Ephesians 4:15-16)
You are invited to join us, via Zoom, for our Wednesday Bible Study:

The Day of Pentecost
This lesson tells the story of the Holy Spirit filling the apostles and empowering them to share the message of the gospel with people of different languages. Clearly this was a most dramatic moment in the life of the early church, an experience described in terms of wind and fire. From this time forward the mighty works of God done in Jesus will be told to all the peoples of the earth, crossing barriers of language and culture.
The psalm describes the wonders of the world created and renewed by the Lord’s Spirit.
In this reading we hear that Christians are all one body and are inspired by the same Spirit which is manifested in a variety of gifts and forms of service. It is the glory of the Christian community that its members have different gifts to offer for the common good. Disciples also come from diverse backgrounds and conditions. Yet the many members form one body, and the only Holy Spirit was poured out for all to drink.
The gospel describes an appearance of the risen Lord in which he bestows the Holy Spirit on his disciples. He brings his disciples peace and tells them of their mission. The ministry which the Father had given Jesus is now carried forward in the world by his followers. The disciples have power over the forgiveness of sins in order to guide others to repentance and faith.

As we continue "Safer At Home," perhaps visiting a church you might otherwise never visit appeals to you. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God's people; make a "spiritual communion" with those gathered and celebrating with you online.

A Prayer On The Day of Pentecost
Come, Holy Spirit of truth, and teach us all truth,
O may there come the sound of a rushing mighty wind from heaven,
and strike us and all the world,
and stir us up from our indifference and despair.
Come, O fire and flame of divine love,
and burn away our sins.
Speak to us, that we may speak to others.
Cleanse us, that we may cleanse others.
Enlighten us, that we may enlighten others,
and set us on fire with love for you
and for all people;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray
Heal those who are sick
with the virus. May they have access to medical care and regain their strength and health; grant them your healing grace. Give strength to all who are caring for loved ones.
Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
For healthcare workers
, who with hearts of service, stand on the front lines of providing care. Grant them courage and protection as they put the needs of public safety before their own.
Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Bless scientists and researchers
around the world as they combat the virus, that their work may yield knowledge to develop a vaccine, treatments, and improved measures to reduce its spread.
Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

Members and Friends of St. Hugh's
First, I am grateful that we have taken precautions to be well and to help others be well. This has required a fasting from our weekly gathering at St. Hugh's. I hope you have feasted on the many online opportunities to study and pray and worship.
I miss getting to see, pray, sing, and worship with you at our beloved St. Hugh's. Too, I regret that we are unable to provide a space for others to gather throughout the week and for special events. I look forward to the time when we can gather again and can share our wonderful building and grounds with our neighbors.
Meanwhile I remind you that even though we may not be able to be physically present at church, our facility still requires our attention in meeting the ongoing expenses for utilities and all those other things that maintain our building and grounds that are unique in all the Diocese.
Please continue to make your regular financial contributions to support the ministry of Christ through our St. Hugh's Church community.
You may be able to use the bill paying feature of your bank to fulfill your pledge or make a donation. Of course, you can simply mail in your check (PO BOX 506 in Idyllwild), or you can use our
Online Giving page
. Thank you for your ongoing support. Blessings to you.
