A message from Pastor J.T. Brown
|
|
For the next few weeks we will continue discussing some of the miracles performed by Jesus Christ in the Gospels. This week we will discuss the story of Jesus feeding five thousand. In our staff meeting we read that story together and discussed some of the questions that arose for us as we read.
There were lots of good questions, but my favorite was one in particular. One staff member spoke up saying, “I wonder what kind of fish they were serving.” As a fisherman, this question posed a good challenge. A fishing trip that produced enough to feed five thousand would make for quite a good fishing story. On one hand, the comment caught my attention because it caused my imagination to take off to exciting places, on the other hand, it really poses a good question. Were these small fish or big fish, how did the whole thing work. Maybe the families present lined up for a buffet style meal. Maybe the disciples sat everyone down and served them as waiters and waitresses do in a restaurant. I also wondered how it was prepared. I can eat a whole flounder myself, but last week I was lucky enough to try a delicious flounder dip appetizer that was sufficient for feeding a whole table.
These miracles challenge us, because they make us wonder what it actually looked like when it happened. What does a miracle look like? Maybe it’s a healing or an unexpected door that opens in the trajectory of our lives. Maybe it’s a career opportunity or a piece of technology that expands the realm of possibility. Maybe it was that moment when you met a friend you didn’t know you needed or when you gave someone what they needed. Maybe a miracle is the birth of child or maybe it was that moment when the tables turn and the children start caring for the parents.
Here at Belin Memorial we are taking on the task of feeding a large crowd in the coming weeks for our annual Fall Harvest Festival & BBQ. A few weeks ago, I know that more than a few of our members felt that they had experienced a miracle as one BBQ provider became unavailable and God quickly made a way introducing us to a new caterer. We are excited about those who we will feed and share in fellowship with. What is a miracle? Is the gathering of people for the glory of God, being fed in body and spirit, or having an eternal reason to live with hope and joy? We can’t do or understand all of the things that Jesus did, but when we come together as the body of Christ it is amazing to see all that we can accomplish. I hope that you will join us in worship, at the Fall Harvest Festival & BBQ, and whenever you can so that we can continue seeking miracles together in the name of Jesus Christ. Have a blessed weekend.
Blessings,
|

Holy God, we give thanks for the many miracles we encounter in life. For the grandiose miracles that transform our lives and for the small miracles that define our lives. Help us to live as those who look for miracles, so that we make the most of every reason we have to sing your praise. Give us grateful hearts and trusting spirits. Help us to serve others with love, so that we might not only celebrate your miracles but participate in them as well. We give all thanks and praise to you knowing that it is right and good and joyful thing. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Acolyte/Crucifer Training
This Monday, September 19, 5 PM
|
Acolyte (noun, from the Greek akólouthos) - an attendant of the Lord’s Table; an attendant, assistant, or helper in worship. An acolyte plays a very important role in worship, a tradition that is more than 1700 years old!
Since ancient times, light and fire have reminded people that God is here with us. An important part of your job as an acolyte is to begin the worship service. In our traditional worship, we have two acolytes and a crucifer. Worship officially begins when the crucifer enters bearing the cross and our acolytes bring the light of Christ into the sanctuary. This is a symbol of Christ’s presence with us at worship. The candles remind us that Christ was human and divine. You are reminding the congregation of God’s presence with us, and the words of Jesus: “I am the light of the world.”
There will be an Acolyte/Crucifer training class in the sanctuary this Monday, September 19, 5 PM. Contact Lou Smith at [email protected] for more information.

Prayers and Concerns
Almighty God, shield of the oppressed, hear us as we pray for the friendless and the lonely, the tempted and the unbelieving. Be merciful to those who suffer, in body and mind, to those who are in danger or distress, and who have suffered loss. Let your love surround the infirm and the aged. Be especially near to those who are passing through the valley of death. May they find eternal rest, and light at evening time.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
