Blessed Sacrament School's Summer Reading 2021!

This summer, let us be connected through books in the marvelous world of reading. Nurturing a love of reading has many rewards!

As part of our STEM accreditation for the 2021-2022 school year, our summer reading program will be a school-wide focus on STEM topics. Each class will be required to read one book and when they return to school in August, teachers will follow up with additional meaningful discussions and assignments in class. For the MS students, please be prepared for a quiz on the first day of school. We will plan to have a STEM Summer Display sometime in September to see the wonderful work done by your children.

Please bring your book with you on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 25, 2021.
Rising Kindergarten- The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashely Spires
Award-winning author and illustrator Ashley Spires has created a charming picture book about an unnamed girl and her very best friend, who happens to be a dog. The girl has a wonderful idea. "She is going to make the most MAGNIFICENT thing! She knows just how it will look. She knows just how it will work. All she has to do is make it, and she makes things all the time. Easy-peasy!"
Parents, we do not expect your child to be able to read independently The Most Magnificent Thing. We hope you will enjoy it together a few times over the summer.
Rising 1st Grade- Izzy Gizmo by Pip Jones
Izzy Gizmo’s inventions are marvelous, magnificent…and often malfunction. Despite the fact that she loves to invent, it never seems to work out in her favor. But when she finds a crow with a broken wing, she has to help!
Parents, we do not expect your child to be able to read independently Izzy Gizmo. We hope you will enjoy it together a few times over the summer.
Rising 2nd Grade- Boxitects by Kim Smith- Meg is a brilliant and creative boxitect. She loves impressing her teacher and classmates with what she makes out of boxes. But there’s a new kid at Maker School: Simone. Simone is good at everything, and worst of all, she’s a boxitect too. When the annual Maker Match is held, Meg and Simone are paired as a team but can’t seem to stop arguing. When their extraordinary project turns into a huge disaster, they must find a way to join creative forces, lift each other up, and work together.
Please save all types of boxes for projects-big and small
Rising 3rd Grade- Jake Drake Know-It-All by Andrew Clements
Jake Drake is excited about Despres Elementary School's first science fair. He wants to win the grand prize: a brand-new Hyper-Cross-Functional Bluntium Twelve computer system. And he really wants to beat the third-grade know-it-alls, Marsha McCall, and Kevin Young.
The trouble is, to beat the know-it-alls, Jake has to become a know-it-all himself. And he may just lose more than he wins.
Rising 4th Grade- The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies
When Evan Treski finds out that his younger sister is skipping third grade and joining his fourth-grade class, he is not happy. The last thing he wants is Jessie showing him up with her perfect grades, and he definitely doesn’t need her help getting his lemonade stand up and running . . . even if the business side of things has got him confused.
Middle School Rising 5th, 6th 7th, and 8th Grade
Hidden Figures-Young Readers’ Edition by Margot Lee Shetterly
This edition is perfect for young readers. It's the powerful story of four African-American female mathematicians at NASA who helped achieve some of the greatest moments in our space program.
Before John Glenn orbited the earth, or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as “human computers” used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space.
This book brings to life the stories of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, who lived through the Civil Rights era, the Space Race, the Cold War, and the movement for gender equality, and whose work forever changed the face of NASA and the country.
Immunizations

For students entering Kindergarten or 7th-grade immunizations will be required by state law. Here is the information listed. An updated immunization record will be needed for our records. If the school does not have an immunization record by September 24, 2021, your child may not return to school (state law) until we have proof of the immunizations.
Rising 7th Grade Required Booster Vaccines

Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis and Meningococcal Boosters
A booster dose of tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap) and one dose of the meningococcal vaccines are required for children who have not previously received it and are entering the seventh grade or by 12 years of age, whichever comes first.
Vacunas

Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
Happy Summer! I hope everyone is doing well. We have been busy here at school and preparing for the 2021-2022 school year. Here are some updates:

  1. Great News! At this time, we will not have to do attestation forms or temperature checks. We do not know any other changes until we hear from Governor Cooper. Let us pray for a semi-normal school year!
  2. On Thursday, July 1 a constant contact will be sent out informing you of the staffing/teaching positions for the school year.
  3. The Makerspace is becoming a reality. Be on the lookout for notices for volunteering to help set up the space once the painting is finished.
  4. There will be other volunteering opportunities in July. We will let you know. Hope you can give a helping hand.

Support BSS Retail Cards Sales!
What are Retail Cards? Retail cards are store certificates (plastic cards) that our school purchases at a discount and sells to you at face value for a school profit. The discount given is different with each vendor. BSS has used the profit money in the past for school technology and current needs of the school.

Why should you buy Retail Cards with BSS?
The profits from this program make up an important part of our fundraising budget. It is an easy and great way to help BSS earn fundraising dollars and not spend an extra dime. Everyone buys groceries and gas, and may occasionally eat out. Before your next trip to the gas station, grocery store, or restaurant, please consider purchasing Retail Cards with us.

Where can I buy these Retail Cards?
You may purchase the Retail Cards in the school office any day during school hours. CLICK HERE to access the order form.
Please make check payable to BSS HSA Scrip. Returned check fee is $35.
Thank you for participating in our school fundraiser.
Visit https:/www.scripzone.com for all participating vendors.
