[Source:  Disability Scoop]

Babies who have trouble falling asleep might later be diagnosed with autism, a new study suggests.
In a  study led by the University of Washington and published recently in the American Journal of Psychiatry, researchers found that "sleep problems in a baby's first 12 months may not only precede an autism diagnosis, but also may be associated with altered growth trajectory in a key part of the brain, the hippocampus."

Visual Method Helps with Learning Language Rules
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

One of two children per class finds it difficult to recognize patterns in spoken language. Imme Lammertink (University of Amsterdam) has demonstrated that these children with a developmental language disorder (DLD) do, however, recognize similar patterns in pictures.

As a child, you learn that it is "he walks" and not "he walk." You learn that because on countless

Pandemic Causing Havoc For Kids with ADHD
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) generally fare better when they have a clear routine. Now, a new study suggests that as the coronavirus pandemic turned family schedules upside down, kids' symptoms often worsened.

The researchers surveyed 241 parents in China, found that the majority said their child's ADHD symptoms had worsened during lockdown and the switch to online schooling.

Two-thirds reported an increase in angry outbursts, while 56% said their child's ability to stick with a daily routine had deteriorated. A similar percentage felt their kids were having difficulty staying focused.

Exposure to 'Good Bacteria' During Pregnancy Buffers Risk of Autism-Like Syndrome in Rats
Giving beneficial bacteria to stressed mothers during the equivalent of the third trimester of pregnancy prevents an autism-like disorder in their offspring, according to a new animal study by University of Colorado Boulder researchers.

The study, published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, marks the latest in a series of studies in animals and humans suggesting that exposure to certain immune-modulating microbes can dampen inflammation, positively impacting the brain and central nervous system.

Edible Sand for Babies!
[Source: Kids Activities Blog]
Babies love to explore - and that includes using their mouths to taste just about everything. That's one of the reasons why this mom's idea for edible sand is so genius.

This is such an easy sensory activity for babies, and one that will entertain them for hours. I wish I had thought of it when my kids were younger!

LGBTQ Book List for Children
[Source: No Time for Flashcards]

It's been seven years since I published my first LGBTQ book list for children. That list had nine books on it, and they were all focused on families. Since then, there has been a shift, and books that include and focus on kids and families in the LGBTQ community are more diverse in all different ways. We still have a long way to go both in publishing and in getting these books on bookshelves, in the hands of children, and being read by teachers

So, who doesn't love giving a big dog a bath? I know you can't see me, so I'll tell you that my hand went up. Spoiler alert: You're going to get wet.

Soggy Doggy comes with a combination tub/shower. There is assembly required before playing and you will have to break it back down to fit it in the box again when you are done. Fortunately it's not difficult. The game also requires 3 AA batteries. Below is a picture of the instructions for assembly and the game, assembled and ready for play.

[Source:  Education Week]

When it comes to parenting students with learning differences, every family's experience is unique. And that reality has never been more true than it is now as millions of students are out of school due to the coronavirus pandemic.  As they juggle remote learning on top of already full plates, parents of these students offer a window into their world- what their challenges are, how they're adapting, what their schedules look like, and the trauma they're seeing in their kids.

School Psych Corner: Suicide Prevention within COVID 19 Pandemic
[Source: NASP]

Over the past several years in working with students at the secondary level, I have found myself approaching school breaks with trepidation for their wellness, mental health, and safety. Unfortunately, when students are out of school, our community has been impacted by student deaths resulting from suicide. Now, impact of the global pandemic has intensified the concern for students given the closures of school buildings with the reopening unknown.

SLP Corner:  Virtual Field Trips in Speech Therapy
[Source:  The Speech Bubble SLP]

Speech has always been a fun place for our kids. We get hands on, we play games ( with a purpose ), we build skills through so many different ways. Sometimes our kids, as well as us, need a change though, so why not a field trip?!
