May is the month of Mary , our Blessed Mother
|
|
Traditionally, the Catholic Church has honored Mary, the mother of Jesus, during the month of May. The Church teaches that Mary is the first and the greatest of all the disciples of Christ. From the earliest times, Christians have sought Mary's prayers and help. They ask Mary to intercede on their behalf, which is entirely appropriate given Mary's preeminent role in salvation history.

THE 50TH ANNUAL PARISH FAIR IS THIS OCTOBER
|
|
Safer at Home for many of us has given us time to clean, sort and organize.
Our prayers continue for those directly affected and on the front lines of COVID-19 and we also want to look ahead to brighter times.
We hope that will include the
50th American Martyrs Parish Fair
as scheduled.
We'd love to celebrate our Fair's storied history at the 50th Annual American Martyrs Parish Fair this October. We are blessed to have so many parishioners who have attended many, many fairs over the past 49 years.
We want to hear from you!
Please send your photos, stories, and description of memorabilia you may have from Parish Fairs past to
Fair50@AmericanMartyrs.org
.
Please include dates whenever possible.
Thanks and see you at Fair 50!

CHURCH RESTORATION & RENEWAL
|
|
If there could ever be a silver lining to a worldwide pandemic, for American Martyrs it might be that it let us get an early start on our church renovation project. We had planned to do the work over the summer, but the mandatory church closure has allowed us to already get well underway.
We’ve demoed all of the hardscape in the front of the church, which was badly damaged, to make way for a larger patio area with better lighting and better ADA access. The repair of all of the damaged brick around the outside of the church is continuing and we are replacing the old roof. On the inside, over the next few months we will be upgrading the electrical, lighting, sound and AV systems. There will be new paint, carpet, doors and finishes throughout and, something everyone will appreciate, brand new restrooms.
This work which was long overdue is possible because of the Called to Renew campaign which every parish In LA is participating in. We started the campaign last year, with the silent phase where Monsignor was meeting personally with some of you. When it was suspended because of the crisis, we had received over $4 million in pledges--already more than halfway to our goal. I know our parish so grateful for your amazing support and incredible generosity. We will restart the Campaign as soon as we can and you will hear much more about it and how you can help us reach the goal at that time. Expect a call.
Feel free to call the office if you have any questions. Our volunteers are answering the phones remotely, and thank you for continuing to support the parish financially during these very challenging times.
God bless,
Bob Hodges

STEWARDSHIP -
Moving Us Closer to God
|
|
When my parents wanted to get my attention, they would call me by my first and last name. If they were even more serious about it, they would also use my middle name. Jesus used a similar technique when He would start a discourse with,
“Amen, amen, I say to you.”
Throughout the Gospel of St. John, Jesus uses this phrase fifty times, twice in today’s reading, which is a signal of how important the subsequent teaching is.
Every year, the Gospel for the Fourth Sunday of Easter comes from the tenth chapter of St. John
’
s Gospel. Much of this chapter focuses on the imagery of the Good Shepherd caring for lost sheep. However I think that today’s Gospel, while it involves a shepherd and sheep, has a slightly different focus.
Jesus uses the term gate and gatekeeper several times in this passage. He, of course, is the gatekeeper and the gate leads to the security of the sheepfold, which symbolizes the Church, the Body of Christ. The gate that Jesus speaks about in the Gospel is not the gate leading to Heaven. We cannot enter the gate into Heaven unless we first enter the gate into the Church here on earth. There are no shortcuts, no jumping over walls, the only entrance is through the gate. We enter by loving God, loving our neighbor and leading a stewardship way of life.
We begin May with many things on our minds and we should also keep in mind that Pentecost, the culmination of our Easter Season, will be celebrated at the end of the month. Let’s use the next four weeks listening for the voice of the Gatekeeper and then following it to our home in the Body of Christ.

STEPHEN MINISTRY - Confidential Care and Support
|
|
Somtimes the voice we need to hear is our own
He was so lonely after the death of his wife. After three years, though he had relatives, friends and faith; he still thought of himself as only “Her” husband. “She” was gone; and, when the loneliness ate into him so deeply he couldn’t stand the hurt, he called the Stephen Ministry. He actually couldn’t keep the tears back. It took many months and a lot of talking on his part and listening by his Stephen Minister before he could think about his future; what he wanted to do and how he was going to set about accomplishing it. Just hearing yourself talk will start the healing process.
