DPH Announces 112 Additional COVID-19 Cases
10,611 Confirmed Cases - 433 Total Deaths in Delaware
According to the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH), Delaware has a total of 433 fatalities due to COVID 19. Individuals who have died ranged in age from 21 to 104 years old. 231 were females and 202 were males. A total of 196 individuals were from New Castle County, 84 were from Kent County, and 153 were from Sussex County. 

The latest Delaware COVID-19 statistics include:
  • 10,611 total laboratory-confirmed cases
  • New Castle County cases: 4,522
  • Kent County cases: 1,602
  • Sussex County cases: 4,470
  • Unknown: 17
  • Age range: 0 to 104
  • Hospitalized: 75; Critically ill: 15
There have been a total of 1,112 positive COVID-19 cases cumulatively involving long-term care residents, and 278 residents of Delaware long-term care facilities have died from complications related to COVID-19.

Governor Carney Signs 22nd Modification to SOE
Sports Tournaments Allowed to Resume
Governor John Carney today signed the 22nd modification to his State of Emergency Order, permitting an expansion of youth sports activities and personal care services if safety guidelines are followed to prevent infection and community spread of COVID-19.  The modification includes:
  • Effective at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20,  youth and adult recreational sports tournaments may resume 
  • Effective at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, June 22, personal care services businesses may expand to 60 percent of stated fire code capacity.
DPH to Hold Conference Call for Physicians / Practice Managers
Important Testing Answers and Information 
The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) will be holding a special operated-assisted call for physicians and practice managers on Tuesday, June 23rd at 6:00 p.m. The topic will focus on all aspects of testing and reporting. Cares Act Provider Relief Fund Update
Webcast Scheduled to Help with Application Process
Last week, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) launched an application portal to distribute $15 billion in CARES Act Provider Relief Fund payments to eligible Medicaid and CHIP physicians and organizations. The payment will be at least 2% of reported gross revenue from patient care, and the final amount will be determined based on submitted data, including the number of Medicaid patients served. Eligible physicians and organizations have until July 20th, to submit their application. HHS is hosting two webcasts at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23 and Thursday, June 25th to review the application process. MSD Joins Societies - Sends Message to Congress
Congress Must Fight for Funding for Community Physician Practices
MSD along with five other state societies has sent a message to Washington urging that Congress continue to fight for needed funding in the next "stimulus" package to assist community physician practices. Among other requests, the final package should include a re-start of the Medicare Advance Payment Program and ensure that grant funding is dedicated to community physician practices without size restrictions or employee thresholds. Read more.
Overdose Deaths on the Rise in Delaware
Officials Fear Increase Due to COVID-19  Stressors
Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) officials are reporting an alarmingly high number of overdose deaths in the First State. According to death investigation reports from the Division of Forensic Science, the highest number for overdose deaths in Delaware in a single month was August 2018 with 39 deaths. Last month tied those numbers. DHSS officials fear the uncertainty associated with the COVID-19 pandemic may be leading to the increase. Read more

The American Medical Association (AMA) is currently soliciting nominations to fill a vacancy for the AMA Council on Legislation (COL).  COL member, David H. Aizuss, MD, was elected to the AMA Board of Trustees which created a vacancy on the COL for the remainder of his unexpired term through June 2021. Dr. Straight shared with host Jeff Balk his journey in becoming a physician, his experiences with being a member and now President of the Medical Society of Delaware, and expanded on the efforts MSD has made regarding telemedicine. New AMA President Takes Office, Shares Goals 
COVID-19, Supply Chain Issues and Racial Disparities in Health Care
With none of the normal fanfare due to COVID-19 restrictions, Susan R. Bailey, MD, an allergist and immunologist from Fort Worth, Texas, quietly became the new president of the American Medical Association in early June. Dr. Bailey is the third consecutive woman to hold the position. In a recent interview, the new president discusses how she saw physicians as a child, her priorities serving in the position, and how the coronavirus pandemic has affected medical practice. "Delaware Day" Moves to Online Format
DHSA Reconfigures Recruiting Event 
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance (DHSA) will be holding their annual Delaware Day recruiting event online.  The recruiting effort targets senior medical residents at Delaware's health systems, DIMER students in residencies anywhere in the United States, previous Delaware Academy of Medicine loan recipients, and advanced practice providers interested in securing employment in Delaware. DHSS Secretary Kara Odom Walker Steps Down
Deputy Secretary Molly Magarik to be Nominated as Replacement
Governor John Carney announced that Delaware Health and Social Services Secretary, Dr. Kara Odom Walker, will leave her current role this summer to join Nemours Children's Health System's Washington office as Senior Vice President and Chief Population Health Officer. Carney will nominate Molly Magarik, who currently serves as deputy secretary of DHSS, to replace Odom Walker. Read more
