IRF e-Learning Webinar

Surrogate Safety Methods to Predict Crashes and Diagnose Risk
Wednesday, June 3
11:00 ED T

Presented by

Prof.Bhagwant Persaud, Ryerson University

Joe DeVore, KLJ Engineering

Craig Milligan, MicroTraffic Road Safety Video Diagnostics

Surrogate indicators are an alternative or a complement to traditional safety analyses based on crash records only. This three-part webinar will deliver a complete overview of the science and applications of surrogate safety in achieving Vision Zero targets. The goal is to assist participants understand the rationale for using different surrogate risk measurements in traffic safety through recent research showing strong crash prediction power of surrogates as well as recent case studies where surrogate risk data influenced real-world engineering projects.

Dr. Bhagwant Persaud will provide a background on the science of surrogate safety. He will present on recent award-winning research that found a strong link between surrogate risk indicators measured in video and the long-term injury crash likelihood at an intersection.  He will compare these video analytics results to earlier work conducted by his lab with simulation-based surrogate safety indicators obtained from VISSIM and SSAM modelling. Dr. Persaud's presentation will identify new frontiers for progress on vision zero based on these capabilities for prediction and measurement.

Joe DeVore will discuss how to quantify future safety using VISSIM and SSAM. The process of only considering historical crash data and using crash modification factors can be a good starting point for assessing the future safety of an alternative, but this process can overlook site-specific conditions that impact safety. To address this gap in methodology, a combination of PTV VISSIM and the Federal Highway Administration's Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM) can be used in combination with other safety techniques to provide an accurate picture of future safety for a wide variety of alternative intersection concepts. Joe will present several project examples of this technique showing the benefit this methodology can have on addressing future site-specific safety concerns.

Craig Milligan will present on how precision diagnostics and lead to targeted infrastructure investments with immediate measurement of effect through road safety video analytics. He will also discuss two techniques for adapting and improving the power of HSM predictive methods using data from video analytics.
