Officer Announcement

The American Bar Foundation Fellows officers have selected Darrell G. Mottley of Banner Witcoff, Ltd. to serve as Chair of the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation (ABF) for the next fiscal year. Mottley will lead the Fellows alongside chair-elect Laura V. Farber, partner at the Pasadena law firm Hahn & Hahn LLP; secretary Frank X. Neuner, Jr., founder and managing partner of corporate defense firm NeunerPate; and immediate past chair Cynthia E. Nance, Dean and the Nathan G. Gordon Professor at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville School of Law.

Tom Ginsburg's Research Cited In The Economist 


Professor Tom Ginsburg's research, The Comparative Constitutions Project, was mentioned in an article in The Economist article about how despots rewrite constitutions to keep themselves in power by removing things like term limits and weakening other institutions.

Reuben J. Miller's Book Mentioned in New York Times Recommendations


Reuben J. Miller's book, Halfway Home: Race, Punishment and the Afterlife of Mass Incarceration, was mentioned in a New York Times article that detailed book recommendations from guests who spoke on The Ezra Klein Show. Eve Ewing, a tenured sociology professor at University of Chicago, and Jamila Michener, an associate professor at Cornell University, recommended Professor Miller's book.

Laura Beth Nielsen and coauthor Kat Albrecht penned an op-ed for Inside Higher Ed on how complicated it can be for students to understand Title IX (9), why it's a problem, and how it relates to their research project, Consent to Sex on Campus

Jimmy Goodman, Oklahoma Visionary Fellow, was elected President of the American Bar Foundation for the 2022-2024 term. He spent the last two years serving as the Vice President.

Nellie L. King, Florida Fellow, Installed as President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers


Nellie King, Florida Fellow, was installed as President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers at the association's annual meeting in Palm Beach, FL. She is the 64th president.

Judge Rachel Pickering, Kansas Fellow, Appointed to Kansas Court of Appeals


Judge Rachel Pickering, Kansas Fellow, was appointed to the Kansas Court of Appeals. Her appointment, which was announced on August 26th, makes her the first Hispanic female Kansan to the Court of Appeals.

Two Fellows Nominated For Federal Judicial Roles by President Biden


Professor Anthony Johnstone, Montana Fellow, and Arun Subramanian, New York Patron Fellow, were announced as President Biden’s intended nominees for two federal judicial roles. Professor Johnstone is the nominee to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Subramanian is the nominee to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Faculty Spotlight

The ABF appointed three law & economics scholars to its research community.

William H. J. Hubbard, Nour J. Abdul-Razzak, and Jacob Goldin bring a wide range of expertise, from the economics of civil procedure, to the economics of crime, to U.S. tax policy & its effect on low-income households.
